Senior Day surge send Marauders past Wildcats 7-0

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day and Homecoming 2025 in spectacular fashion. Scoring a season-high seven times, the Marauders overwhelmed visiting Wayne State College 7-0.

The Wildcats, who entered the game tied for 4th place in the Northern Sun and ranked third in scoring defense, had allowed just six goals in their first nine games of the season.

The seven goals was the most scored by UMary in a game since defeating the University of Minnesota Crookston 7-0 in 2019.

The victory was the first in the Northern Sun this season for the Marauders, who improved to 3-4-3 overall and 1-3-3 (6 points) in the NSIC. The Wildcats are 4-2-4 and 3-2-2 (11 NSIC points).

Bella Kozlowski opened the scoring in the 9th minute, scoring her first college goal when she cleaned up a loose ball in the box following a UMary corner kick. Blasting a shot with her left foot that may have glanced off the WSC goalkeeper, Kozlowski buried her attempt in the left side of the net.

The Marauders doubled their lead in the 21st minute when two seniors combined forces. With Olivia Gardner sprinting towards the goal, Rio Spruenken delivered a perfect ball to catch Gardner in stride, allowing Gardner to jet past a pair of defenders before delivering a perfect shot from outside the top left corner of the box into the right side of the net.

Theresa English capped a big first half for UMary with the Marauders third goal. Claiming a ball misplayed by the Wildcats, English hammered home a shot from 30 yards out that sailed just under the crossbar.

The Marauders onslaught continued early in the second half. From the Marauders defensive side of the field, Tara Young blasted a ball over the top of the Wildcats defense. Maicee Burke tracked the ball down on the second bounce just outside the goal box and chipped the ball into the net in the 50th minute.

Five minutes later Gardner tallied again, taking a feed from Rachel Gensch in the left side of the penalty area before ripping a shot 15 yards into the right side of the net.

Using a great run around Wildcat defenders, English added her second goal in the 68th minute.

Kylan Campbell closed the scoring with the Marauders seventh goal in the 79th minute . It was Campbell's first career goal.

Not to be overlooked was another impressive defensive performance by UMary as the Marauders recorded their fourth shutout of the season. Kadyn Dilger faced just five shots in the game and needed to make one save in earning her fourth clean sheet this season.

The Marauders held a 21-5 edge in shots with an 11-1 advantage in shots on frame.

Prior to the game, UMary recognized seniors MaLiah Burke (Minot, ND), Olivia Gardner (Winona, MN), Rachel Gensch (Rocklin, CA), Kira Hockley (Yeovil, England), Allison Lepp (Minot, ND), Rio Spruenken (Krefeld, NRW, Germany), and Tara Young (Weston Super Mare, England) for their contributions to the program.

Gardner, Gensch, Spruenken and Young all picked up points in the game.

UMary next hosts Augustana on Family and Faculty Appreciation Day on Sunday, October 12. Game time is 1 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
