Early scoring fades for #14 Marauders in 6-2 loss at #2 Beavers

MINOT, ND – First period goals by Crae Dawson and Joe Gronholz provided an early spark for the 14th ranked University of Mary men's hockey team but the Marauders couldn't continue the scoring pace in a 6-2 loss at #2 Minot State University. It was UMary's first game in nearly four weeks.

After the non-conference game between two Midwest College Hockey foes, the Marauders slip to 16-7-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall. The Beavers improve to 21-4-2-0-0-1.

In the fourth meeting of the season between the Marauders and the Beavers, host Minot State struck twice in less than a two-minute span midway through the first period. Dawson cut the UMary deficit in half with his 11th goal of the season at the 15:10 mark.

The Beavers pushed their advantage back to a pair of goals after scoring on the power play at 17:47.

With time running out on the opening period, Gronholz scored with 38 seconds on the clock to send the Marauders into the first intermission trailing 3-2.

Taking advantage of a pair of UMary penalties, Minot State tallied two more power play goals, the second coming with four seconds left in the middle stanza for a 5-2 Beavers lead after two periods. The home team later tacked on the lone goal of the third period.

UMary finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play while Minot State scored on three of four opportunities with a man advantage. The Beavers outshot the Marauders 35-16, including a 19-6 edge in the first 20 minutes.

The Marauders next host Iowa State University for the third time this season in a 2 pm game on Sunday, January 12, at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND. Tickets can be purchased online at www.UMaryTickets.com.
