MANDAN, ND – A hat trick by
Michael Heitkamp and six goals total by #14 University of Mary defensemen headlined a 10-1 win by the Marauders over visiting Waldorf University in the weekend opener.
Playing against his former team, Heitkamp also contributed a pair of assists in addition to his three goals for a five-point night. Heitkamp's fellow blueliners added three more goals with
Dylan Cunningham finding the net twice and
Ben Tschida scoring once. In all, the three defensemen racked up 10 points in the game as Tschida matched Heitkamp with two assists.
The Marauders improved to 20-10-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 19-10-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play and 10-5-0-0-0-0 against Midwest College Hockey competition. Waldorf is 4-19-0-0-0-0 overall and 4-15-0-0-0-0 in MCH play.
UMary once again reached 20 victories with the win. The Marauders have won 20 or more games in all seven seasons since the hockey program started in the 2018-19.
Heitkamp opened the scoring just 4:22 into the game.
Alex Senf and
Lyndon Orr also tallied in the opening period. Tschida pushed the Marauders advantage to 4-0 when he found the net at 11:28 of the second. The Warriors interrupted the Marauders scoring run with less than five minutes remaining in the second to close the gap to 4-1.
UMary exploded for six goals in the final 20 minutes. Cunningham scored twice in the first four minutes before Heitkamp scored his second goal at 7:18. Heitkamp picked up the hat trick with a shorthanded goal to increase the score to 8-1.
Marino Ramirez was strong in net for the Marauders, turning aside 27 of the 28 shots he faced in the game.
UMary held an impressive 53-28 edge in shots, including a 23-9 mark in the final period.
The Marauders and the Warriors close out the series on Saturday, February 1, at 5 pm in UMary's annual Military Appreciation Game.
The annual Military Appreciation Game honors United States military veterans and those currently serving in the armed forces. Military veterans and active-duty service members plus a guest will be admitted free with a military ID to Saturday's game. Additionally the first 150 fans receive a Military Appreciation puck courtesy of Mandan Automotive and Marauders skaters will present selected military veterans with a hockey jersey during the 1st intermission.
Following the Military Appreciation Game fans are invited to join the UMary hockey team on the ice for Skate with the Marauders. Bring your skates and join the fun. The Marauders will also be signing autographs.
