Jones, McGaskey paces Marauders efforts in road loss to Beavers

BEMIDJI, MN – Despite a 20 point outing by Kevin McGaskey and another big defensive effort by Jeremiah Jones, the University of Mary men's basketball team came up short in an 88-76 road loss at Bemidji State University.

McGaskey scored at least 20 points in a game for the third time this season. The grad transfer from Prairie View A&M knocked down a trio of treys in five attempts. Additionally McGaskey drew six fouls in the game and went 5-of-8 at the free throw line.

Jones, who owns team NCAA records for steals in a game and a season, posted seven steals in the game. The NSIC steals leader just missed matching his school record of eight, set two weeks ago at Sioux Falls. The sophomore guard had another big night across the board, scoring 16 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Jones dished two assists and hit a pair of treys.

Alex Mattes drained three treys in six attempts and made 6-of-10 shots overall on the way to 15 points. Ty Rogers reached double figures for the third straight game with 11 points.

John Sutherland led the Beavers with 26 points and eight assists. He made 13-of-16 shots while playing all 40 minutes. John Pecarich was 6-of-9 behind the arc and scored 24 points. Tate Olson had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Down eight in the first half, Matteo Otasevic hit a trey to cap a 13-5 Marauders (4-20 overall, 2-13 Northern Sun) run to tie the game at 28-28. The Beavers (8-14, 5-11) closed the half on an 11-4 run to grab a 39-32 lead at intermission.

The Beavers proved incredibly proficient offensively in the second half. UMary closed within four points several times before Bemidji State pulled away for the win. BSU made 78% of its shots in the second half and 61% for the game. The Marauders, who finished 11-of-28 on treys, shot 44% for the game.

Led by Jones, the Marauders forced 15 turnovers and committed just eight to outscore the Beavers 21-5 on points from turnovers. BSU used its 35-25 rebounding edge for a 13-5 advantage on second chance points.

The Marauder return home to host the University of Minnesota Crookston at 3:30 pm on Saturday, February 1, at the McDowell Activity Center.
