Defending national champs surge past Marauders in opening game of the New Year

BISMARCK, ND – Facing the defending national champions in the first game of the New Year, the University of Mary men's basketball team slowed the Minnesota State University attack early before the visiting Mavericks surged to a 90-49 win over the Marauders.

Back to back treys by Ty Rogers and Tamarrein Henderson gave the Marauders an early 16-14 lead. After a surge by the Mavericks allowed the visitors to take the lead, a pair of free throws from Rogers pulled UMary within a possession at 21-18 with under eight minutes remaining in the first half. Minnesota State soon caught fire and took a 40-28 lead into intermission.

Alex Mattes hit a pair of treys and made all three of his shots on the way to a team-leading nine points for UMary (4-12 overall, 2-5 Northern Sun). Gunner Swanson added two 3-pointers of his own and scored eight points to go with three steals. Jeremiah Jones registered three assists, two steals, four rebounds and six points. Henderson came off the bench and drained both his treys to score six points.

Harrison Braudis led Minnesota State (9-6, 5-2) with 17 points and six rebounds. Justin Eagins added 15 points and nine assists.

The Marauders close out the weekend with a visit from Winona State University on Saturday, January 4. Game time is 5:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center. Tickets are available online at www.UMaryTickets.com.
