Bad bounce turns tide against #12 Marauders in road loss to #1 Beavers

MINOT, ND – An unfortunate bounce turned the tide against the #12 University of Mary hockey team in a 6-2 loss at #1 Minot State University to wrap up a home-and-home weekend series between the two Highway 83 rivals.

The Marauders are now 19-10-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 18-10-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play and 9-5-0-0-0-0 against Midwest College Hockey competition. The Beavers are 28-4-2-0-0-1 overall and 18-0-0-0-0-0 in MCH play.

Deadlocked 1-1 after the first period, Minot State's Ryan Monias rifled a shot safely past UMary goalkeeper Caleb Cross and high over the net. The puck bounced off the glass and rebounded directly back over the top of the Marauders goal, striking Cross in the back and tumbling into the net for a Beavers goal and a 2-1 lead 3:35 into the second period.

Minot State tacked on two more goals and led 4-1 entering the third period.

The Marauders struck quickly in the third to cut the deficit in half. Skating with the puck at the bottom of the right circle, Derek Dropik fired a low angle shot that Beavers goalkeeper Jake Anthony couldn't control and landed in the net just 17 seconds into the final period. It was the 7th goal of the season for Dropik.

The Beavers responded just 14 seconds later with a Reid Arnold goal to push the Minot State lead to 5-2.

Both teams tallied in the first period. After MSU opened the scoring midway through the first period, Hunter Mangan pulled the Marauders even at 13:19. Parked right in front of the Beavers net, Mangan deflected a long shot attempt from just inside the blue line by Lucas Medeiros for his ninth goal of the season.

The Marauders next return home to host Waldorf 4 pm on Friday, January 31, and 5 pm on Saturday, February 1, at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND. Tickets are available online at www.UMaryTickets.com.
