th ranked University of Mary scored four goals in both the first and third periods to overwhelm the University Central Oklahoma 8-2 on the final day of the ACHA M1 Showcase. Three different Marauders scored a pair of goals in the contest.
UMary finished 2-1 at the Showcase. After dropping a 4-2 decision in the opener to weekend host Maryville University, the Marauders bounced back with a 2-1 win over West Chester University before routing the Bronchos on day three.
The Marauders improve to 19-8-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 18-8-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play. The Bronchos are 10-12-1-0-0-0.
Joe Gronholz ignited the Marauders with the first of his two goals just 4:03 into the game.
Michael Heitkamp doubled the UMary lead at the 10:09 mark before
Lucas Medeiros scored 62 seconds later to increase the Marauders advantage to 3-0. It was also the first of two goals in the game for Heitkamp and Medeiros.
Lyndon Orr tacked on the fourth first period goal for UMary at 14:32. The Bronchos found the net for the first time 27 seconds later to pull within 4-1 at the end of the first period. Central Oklahoma halved the UMary lead to 4-2 with the lone goal of the third period.
The Marauders pulled away with a big third session.
Palmer Sinclair tallied at 4:27 before Heitkamp scored on a power play opportunity at 8:22. Medeiros scored again four minutes later to put the game out of reach. Gronholz finished the game with a shorthanded goal with 47 seconds remaining in the game.
Zane Clausen had a strong game in net for the Marauders, turning away 25 of the 27 shots he faced in the game.
Orr and Palmer both added a pair of assists in addition to their goals for a 3-point game. Palmer added a pair of assists in addition to his goal for three points.
David Loahr was credited with a pair of assists. Overall 10 Marauders registered at least one point in the game.
UMary finished with a 44-27 edge in shots for the game, including a 20-8 advantage in the first period. UCO was 1-for-5 on the power play while UMary finished 1-for-3.
The Marauders return home to host Minot State University on Saturday, January 25. The Midwest College Hockey game is set for 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND.
