Marauders pick up first win of the season in Saturday split

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The University of Mary volleyball team picked up their first victory of the season, defeating Cameron University 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 25-16, 25-21) in the Mountain Lion Classic. UMary then fell to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 3-1 (17-25, 25-16, 15-25, 21-25).

FIRST MATCH
The Marauders got off to a strong start in the first set as they took an early 11-3 lead. A Robi Binagi kill secured a 25-15 set victory for UMary. CU responded by winning the second set 25-21.

The third set saw the score at 8-8 when the Marauders rallied off 7 of the next 8 points to take a 15-9 lead. A Gabby Caskey kill took down the third set 25-16 for UMary.

The Marauders held a 23-16 lead in the fourth set. The Aggies attempted a late rally that was denied, as Binagi would once again deliver the final blow as UMary won the set 25-21 and earned the victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Gabby Caskey recorded 13 kills on a .300 attack percentage. Gaskey also grabbed three blocks and three aces.

Charli Blackman had 13 kills and eight digs.

Robi Binagi posted 12 kills and two blocks.

Maddy Freed put up 39 assists and seven digs.

Kaia Sueker recorded 14 digs and four assists.

SECOND MATCH
UCCS took down the first set 25-17. UMary got back on track in the second set, winning five of the last six points to earn a 25-16 set victory.

The Mountain Lions won the next set 25-15. The fourth set was a tight back-and-forth contest with both teams exchanging leads. With the score tied at 20-20, UCCS won five of the next six points to win the set and the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
Gabby Caskey continued her efficient start to the season, recording 13 kills on a .370 hitting percentage.                                                                                                                                                                                                         McKenna Kirkpatrick was tremendous on defense, posting ten blocks.. Kirkpatrick also recorded five kills and four digs.

Maddy Freed had 37 assists, nine digs and four blocks.

Charli Blackman had nine kills and 12 digs.

UP NEXT 
The Marauders travel to Kearney, NE, to compete in the Rosella Meier UNK Fall Classic. They open the tournament by taking on the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Friday, September 13, with the match scheduled for a noon start time.
