BILLINGS, MT – A big first half blast by
Kira Hockley followed by a pair of goals by two newcomers earned the University of Mary soccer team a 3-0 win over Black Hills State University. The Marauders first win of the season came on the last day of the Rimrock Classic to close out opening weekend.
Hockley delivered the Marauders opening goal on a brilliant shot from well atop the box. Holding off a defender,
Rachel Gensch played the ball from the top center of the penalty area straight back to Hockley. The Marauders junior midfielder one-timed the ball into the upper left 90 of the goal, just under the crossbar and over the outstretched hand of Yellow Jackets goalkeeper Makayla Dannelly in the 24
th minute of play for the lone score of the first half.
Taking advantage of one of their eight corner kicks of the game,
Allison Lepp doubled the Marauders lead as she headed in a perfect serve from
Rio Spruenken. Camped inside the far post, the transfer from Western Washington scored her first Marauders goal in the 51
st minute.
Gensch, a transfer from Sierra College, sealed the Marauders victory with a goal in the 69
th minute. With Dannelly pushing forward off the end line, Gensch took a pass from Hockley and crushed a shot from 40 yards out. The ball carried inside the right post for a stunning goal as the Yellow Jackets goalkeeper was unable to retreat back into position, giving the junior her first UMary goal in addition to her assist earlier in the match.
Hockley joined Gensch with both a goal and an assist.
Molly Fisher and
Kadyn Dilger combined for the clean sheet. Fischer made UMary's four saves in the game.
The Marauders (1-1 overall) held the advantage in shots (18-7), shots on frame (10-4) and corner kicks (8-3).
Next up for UMary is the Marauders home opener against Emporia State University on Sunday, September 15. Game time is 1 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
