MANDAN, ND – A new-look University of Mary hockey team featuring new jerseys and 16 new skaters turned to their old guard to lead the 11th ranked Marauders to a 7-2 victory over #25 Iowa State University in the season opener.
Playing in front of a boisterous home crowd,
Nick Bradshaw opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game. Perched just outside the crease by the left goalpost, Bradshaw - one of only eight returning Marauders – knocked home the puck off a rebound from a shot by
Palmer Sinclair.
Taking advantage of an Iowa State penalty,
Alex Senf snagged the puck in the slot and fired top shelf for the second UMary goal of the afternoon in his first-ever Marauders game with 3:13 to play in the period.
Playing hard till the end of the opening period, the Marauders added a third goal off a strong forecheck.
Joe Gronholz took the puck away from a Cyclones defender and fed
Liam Massie in the slot. The UMary veteran deked the Cyclones goaltender onto the ice and fired the puck into the right side of the net to increase the UMary lead to 3-0 with 66 seconds left in the period.
UMary continued to press and outscored Iowa State 2-1 in each of the next two periods. Gronholz and Sinclair scored goals in the second for the Marauders and Senf and
Crae Dawson found the net in the third period.
Gronholz had an impressive Marauders debut with four points, scoring one game and adding three assists. Senf finished with two goals, Massie and goal and an assist and
Lucas Medeiros pitched in a pair of helpers. Overall 10 Marauders picked up a point in the game.
Marino Ramirez made a strong debut in net for UMary. The native of St. Charles, IL, turned away 19 of the 21 shots he faced in the game.
William Pinney made 45 saves in the game for Iowa State. Sam Eaton scored both Cyclones goals.
The Marauders finished 2-for-6 on the power play while stifling all five of the Cyclones opportunities with a man advantage. UMary held a 52-21 edge in shots.
The Marauder and the Cyclones close out opening weekend for both teams with a rematch at 2 pm on Sunday, September 15, at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND.
