BISMARCK, ND – Trying to stave off the end of the season for as long as possible, the University of Mary took the University of Minnesota Crookston into extra innings but couldn't find away to earn another game. Playing in an elimination game on day two of the Northern Sun baseball tournament, the Marauders were edged 6-5 by the Golden Eagles.
In a game that featured three ties and three lead changes, the Marauders took a 5-4 lead in the 11
th inning when
Cru Walker scored on a Golden Eagles error.
Minnesota Crookston, the #3 seed, found a way to rally in the bottom of the 11
th inning. After a pair of walks and a wild pitch placed both runners in scoring position, Danny Wensloff delivered a walk-off double down the right field line to score both runners and end the Marauders season.
Ryan Chamberlain, who had won his previous three starts, again was strong on the hill. The sophomore limited the Golden Eagles to two runs in five innings, both runs scoring in the fifth. He struck out five and allowed just three hits and one walk.
The Marauders wasted no time pulling even as
Carter Beck blasted a 2-run home run in the 6
th inning, scoring
Kalem Haney. It was the 12
th home run of the season for the NSIC Freshman of the Year.
UMary then took its first lead of the day as
Krece Papierski pulled a home run over the left field wall to score two more runs and claim a 4-2 lead. It was the 72
nd home run of the season, equaling the school single season record that was set last season.
With All-NSIC relief pitcher
Mark Schommer on the hill and starting his third inning of work after throwing two scoreless innings for UMary, UMC's Teddy Giefer hit a 2-run home run to pull even.
The Marauders had chances in the 10
th and 11
th innings, leaving the bases full both times.
Beck and
Noah Hull both had a pair of hits for UMary with Beck scoring once and driving in two runs. The Marauders had 10 hits total.
Schommer pitched a career-high 5.0 innings of relief. He struck out eight and allowed four runs.
Wensloff was the only UMC player to have two hits.
Brady Sorenson went 6.2 innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out six. The Marauders, the #7 seed in the tourney, finish the season 23-27. UMC improves to 35-15.
