SIOUX FALLS, SD – The University of Mary baseball team fell short in their hopes of knocking off a hot Augustana University squad as the Vikings wrapped up the four-game series with 11-3 and 10-0 wins over the Marauders.
The Marauders opened the scoring in the Northern Sun doubleheader with a single run in the opening inning.
Michael Polson, who had four hits on Friday, tripled to lead off the game and scored on a ground out by
Krece Papierski.
Noah Hull followed with a double but was stranded. Augie also started the game with a triple but
Jaxon Zanolli struck out the next three hitters to preserve the UMary lead.
UMary looked to extend its lead in the second inning as
Bryce Leafgren,
Kyle Jameson and
Kalem Haney all singled to load the bases with only one out. Unable to capitalize on the opportunity, the Marauders wouldn't have another baserunner until the sixth inning.
The Vikings posted four runs in the third to claim a 4-1 lead and tacked on another four in the fourth to pull away.
The Marauders closed out the opener with a Haney double scoring Jameson. Haney eventually crossed the plate on a wild pitch for the final run in an 11-3 loss.
Haney led the Marauders (11-17 overall, 7-11 NSIC) attack with two hits, including the double. He scored once and drove in a run.
Multiple runs in three straight innings gave the Vikings (22-6, 14-4) a 7-0 lead after four innings in game two. Augie scored in four of eight innings for a 10-0 Vikings win.
Hull had one of four Marauders hits in game two, posting a double in both games. Haney had a hit to give him three on the day.
The Marauders return home to host Northern State University in an NSIC doubleheader starting at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, April 10, at Municipal Ballpark.
