SIOUX FALLS, SD – A dominant second-half performance sees the University of Mary women's basketball team advance to the semifinals of the Northern Sun tournament after defeating St. Cloud State University 75-61. This is the first time in program history that the Marauders have advanced to the semifinals of the NSIC tournament at the Sanford Pentagon.
UMary takes on the winner of the Concordia, St. Paul- Minnesota Duluth matchup on Monday, March 4, at 7 pm in Sioux Falls, SD.
Megan Zander showcased why she is an NSIC All-First team member by dropping a season-high 28 points. Zander shot 8-of-18 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. The Mandan, ND, native also reached 1000 points in her Marauders career after today's performance.
Lexie Schneider posted her 15
th double-double of the season, scoring 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Schneider shot an efficient 8-of-11 from the field and 5-of-7 from the foul line.
Bergan Kinnebrew tied her season in scoring as the freshman had 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. The Bismarck, ND, native made big contributions on the defensive end with two blocks and two steals coming off the bench.
The Marauders struggled shooting in the first quarter as they trailed 15-11 after one. The second quarter saw UMary outscore SCSU 24-17 to take a 35-32 lead at the half.
UMary shot 57.1% from the field in the third quarter, taking a six-point lead into the fourth quarter. The Marauders defense came alive in the fourth, holding the Huskies to just 3-of-13 shooting to secure a 75-61 win.
UMary (21-10, 16-6 Northern Sun) shot 44.4 percent from the field while shooting 3-of-21 from behind the arc. NSU (18-10, 14-8 NSIC) recorded a 38.9 shooting percentage from the field while going 3-of-16 from three.
The Marauders went 24-of-29 from the free throw line, while the Huskies shot 16-of-22 from the charity stripe. UMary won the rebounding battle, outrebounding SCSU 35-27. Turnovers were even as both teams committed 14 giveaways.
