MANDAN, ND – In a rugged, physical contest between two familiar foes, the University of Mary fell just short of capturing the Midwest College Hockey tournament title in the Marauders first year in the MCH. Playing on their home ice as tournament host, #2 seed UMary was edged 2-1 by I-29 rival and #1 seed University of Jamestown in the MCH championship game.
The victory earns the Jimmies the Lindsay Cup and the MCH's automatic berth to the American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 1 national tournament.
In the fifth meeting of the season between the Marauders and the Jimmies, Jamestown opened the scoring at 6:51 in the first period on a power play goal by Kole Christensson. UMary had a couple opportunities to find the equalizer but rang a pair of shots off the post.
The Marauders pulled even early in the second period. Andy Huber found himself behind the Jimmies defense and received a perfect headman pass from
Cyril Nagurski. All alone against UJ goalkeeper Brandon Weare, Huber buried the puck for his 10
th goal of the season at the 4:24 mark.
Morgan Venne pushed the Jimmies back in front at 15:24 in what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Both goaltenders denied every scoring opportunity the remainder of the game. The Marauders had a power play opportunity with just over six minutes left in the contest but were denied access to the Jimmies net.
Kyle Hayden finished the game with 43 saves for the Marauders. Weare made 26 saves and was named the MCH tournament most outstanding player.
The Marauders, ranked #10 in the country and now with a record of 25-12-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOW-SOL), next visit #1 Minot State University on Thursday, February 22. The #5 Jimmies are 25-11-0-0.
