Schommer slams door shut as Marauders outslug Lewis 16-14

JOPLIN, MO – An offensive onslaught led by the red-hot Kalem Haney and a shut-down relief performance by Mark Schommer carried the University of Mary baseball team to their first win of the season on day three of the MSSU Lions Classic, a 16-14 slugfest over Lewis University. UMary had to overcome two deficits in the game to earn the victory.

Haney had four hits for the second straight game. The sophomore was 4-for-5 with a pair of triples, scored twice and drove in five runs. He also walked once. In three games Haney is 10-for-15 with four triples, five runs scored and seven RBIs.

Freshman Carter Beck had a breakout game for UMary. The leftfielder was 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI. He had a double and a triple.

Daniel Martin had two hits, scored three times and drove in a run. Isaac Pegors homered, scored twice and drove in two. Dylan Edmunds also homered, scored twice and drove in one run. Kyle Jameson scored three times. Krece Papierski had two hits and an RBI. Josh Walker doubled and drove in three.

Down 10-7 after four innings, the Marauders scored once in the fifth before erupting for four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Edmonds cracked a solo shot and Pegors cracked a 2-run home run before Haney tripled home the fourth run of the sixth. In the seventh, Beck tripled home the first run before Haney cleared the bases with another three bagger.

Lewis battled back with two runs with a 4-run seventh before Schommer took control of the game in the eighth. The senior struck out four and allowed just one hit and hit a batter while pitching two scoreless innings.

Paxton Miller pitched the first three innings. Lewis scored six runs but none were earned off Miller. Kevin Millar then came on in relief, allowing one earned run in three innings to get the win. Kayden Beauregard pitched a scoreless inning of relief before handing the ball to Schommer.

Both teams pounded out 16 hits in the game. Kocen had a triple and home run and led Lewis (1-2) with four hits, three runs and five RBIs.

The Marauders wrap up their trip to Joplin on Monday, February 19, with a single game against host and 14th ranked Missouri Southern. Game time is 1 pm.
