Dawson tallies twice as #15 Marauders skate past Warriors 7-4 to complete weekend sweep

ALBERT LEA, MN – A pair of goals and an assist by Crae Dawson keyed a freewheeling 7-4 road win for #15 University of Mary over Waldorf University in Midwest College Hockey play.

In a game that featured two lead changes and two ties, the Marauders scored multiple goals in all three periods, including three goals in the final stanza to hold off the Warriors and complete a weekend sweep for UMary over Waldorf.

The Marauders are 15-5-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 8-2-0-0-0-0 in MCH competition. The Warriors are 4-12-0-0-0-0.

Dawson opened the scoring just 96 seconds into the game. Walford evened the game a short time later with a goal by Evan Koivunen at 4:49. Hunter Mangan, who had a pair of assists in Friday's 3-0 UMary win, scored his only goal of the weekend at 13:37 to send the Marauders into the first intermission leading 2-1.

Both teams scored twice in the second period. After a power play goal by Waldorf only 93 seconds into the middle period, Liam Massie reclaimed the lead for UMary at 4:46. Team captain Michael Heitkamp, who played at Waldorf before transferring to UMary prior to last season, tallied a power play goal at 14:39 to extend UMary's lead to 4-2. With just four seconds before the second intermission, though, the Warriors found the net to close within 4-3.

UMary pulled away in the third as Derek Dropik and Dawson scored the first two goals to create a 6-3 advantage for UMary. It was the second goal of the weekend for Dropik.

The Warriors kept attacking and scored at 15:30 but would climb no closer. Alex Senf closed out the UMary win with an empty net goal with 24 seconds showing on the clock.

UMary finished with a 40-29 edge in shots and a 1-for-5 effort on the power play. Waldorf scored once in four opportunities with a man advantage.

The Marauders return to North Dakota for a home-and-home series with the 5th ranked University of Jamestown. On Friday, December 13, UMary hosts Jamestown in a 7 pm game at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND. The teams reverse site with a 7 pm contest in Jamestown, ND, on Saturday, December 14.
