JAMESTOWN, ND – Unable to overcome a slow start despite a pajr of goals in the third period, #14 University of Mary dropped a 3-2 road decision at #5 University of Jamestown to split the weekend Midwest College Hockey home-and-home series.
The Marauders, who earned a 5-3 home win Friday, is 16-6-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 15-6-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play and 8-2-0-0-1-0 against Midwest College Hockey competition for 26 points. The Jimmies are 17-8-0-0-0-0 and 10-3-0-0-0-0 for 30 points.
The Jimmies lead The Jug series two wins to one in the inaugural season of the trophy. UMary and Jamestown play five games this season with the winner claiming The Jug trophy .
Despite a combined 24 shots in the first period – including 14 for the Marauders – neither team managed to score.
The Jimmies broke through with a pair of goals in the second period.
Hunter Mangan closed the gap to 2-1 at 2:07 of the third period before Kaelan Shelton tallied for the Jimmies on a power play to push the Jamestown advantage to 3-1.
Joe Gronholz responded with a power play goal at 16:36 to again pull UMary within a goal but the Marauders were unable to find the equalizer.
Marino Ramirez finished the night with 32 saves in the game for UMary. Brandon Weare turned aside 33 shots for Jamestown.
Both teams finished 1-for-3 on the power play.
UMary next returns to action January 8 at #2 Minot State University.
