Massie, #14 Marauders rally past #5 Jimmies 5-3 to even The Jug series

MANDAN, ND – Liam Massie scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the third period, as #14 University of Mary rallied from a 2-goal deficit to down 5th ranked University of Jamestown 5-3. The UMary home win evens up The Jug series between the Marauders and the Jimmies this season with each team claiming a victory.

The Marauders improve to 16-5-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 15-5-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play and 9-2-0-0-0-0 against Midwest College Hockey competition. The Jimmies are 16-8-0-0-0-0.

In the first Midwest College Hockey meeting of the season between the two I-94 rivals after the Marauders and the Jimmies played a non-conference game in October, Massie opened the scoring at 11:30 of the first period. The Jimmies responded with two goals in 53 seconds, taking at 2-1 lead on a Brad Fortin goal at 14:15 to send Jamestown into the first intermission with the advantage. Skating shorthanded, the Jimmies scored a goal just 1:52 into the second period to push the visitor's advantage to 3-1.

The complexion of the game changed with a pair of power play opportunities for UMary. Unable to capitalize on a 5-on-3 advantage, the Marauders found the net with a 5-on-4 power play goal. Breaking out from the UMary defensive zone, Alex Senf carried the puck down the left boards before centering a pass into the slot for Dylan Cunningham. Tied for the team lead in assists, Cunningham showed he can also bury the puck when he ripped a shot into the top left corner of the next at 9:35 to pull UMary within 3-2.

Just 74 seconds with the Marauders on another power play, the roles reversed as Senf scored with Cunningham getting an assist. Taking a shot from atop the slot, Cunningham's scoring attempt was turned away by Jimmies goalkeeper Brandon Weare into the left corner. Derek Dropik quickly played the puck to Senf in the left circle. After creating some space, Senf tied the game 3-3 at the 10:49 mark when he blistered a shot into the top left corner of the net for his 13th goal of the year.

Massie gave the Marauders their second lead of the game at 3:21 of the third period. Camped to the left side of the goal, Massie pounced on a rebound following a shot by Joe Gronholz and jammed the puck into the net for his ninth goal this season and a 4-3 UMary lead.

Marino Ramirez made the Massie goal stand up by turning aside all nine shots he faced in the final period. For the game Ramirez posted 29 saves. Weare had 27 for the Jimmies.

Gronholz closed out the game as he tallied an empty net goal with four seconds left.

In addition to Massie, three other Marauders had multi-point games. Cunningham and Gronholz both had a goal and two assists and Senf had a goal and one assist.

UMary finished 2-for-6 on the power play as Jamestown committed seven infractions for 14 minutes. The Jimmies were 0-for-3 with a man advantage as the Marauders were whistled for four penalties covering eight minutes.

The weekend series between the Marauders and the Jimmies wraps up Saturday, December 14, in Jamestown. The puck drops at 7 pm.
