BISMARCK, ND –
Xavier Lewis scored a dozen points for the University of Mary in the Marauders lone scheduled meeting of the season against Highway 83 rival Minot State University.
Lewis was the only Marauder to reach double digits in UMary's 89-62 loss to the 13
th ranked Beavers. A junior forward from Lynwood, IL, Lewis did much of his work inside and finished 5-for-8 from the floor. He also had three rebounds and two assists in the Northern Sun meeting.
This was the Marauders second straight home game against a nationally-ranked team and the fifth game this season against a team recognized in a national poll.
Kevin McGaskey added nine points and three assists for UMary, making all four of his free throws. Tamerrein Henderson came off the bench to score eight points with two steals. He also converted all four of his free throws in the game. In his second collegiate performance,
Alex Dvorak hit a pair of treys in three tries to score six points.
Minot State scored first and led the whole game. Both teams struggled to score early and UMary trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half. Keyed by a 3-point play by Henderson and capped by a McGaskey trey, UMary used a 14-6 run to close within 35-27. A Beavers basket at the halftime buzzer halted the Marauders momentum as MSU entered the break leading 42-30.
Aggressive to the basket, the Marauders (3-9 overall, 1-2 Northern Sun) went to the free throw line 25 times – their 2
nd highest total of the season – and made 16. The Beavers (12-0, 4-0 NSIC) finished 11-of-15 at the line. Minot State controlled the paint, outscoring UMary 46-22 while holding the edge in rebounding (42-24) and shooting (58.3% to 37%).
Jalen Cook led the Beavers with 22 points. Caleb Van De Griend had 13 points and 13 rebounds.
After two straight home games, the Marauders now have back-to-back road games. UMary next plays at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, December 14, with a 4 pm start in Crookston, MN. The Marauders then visit St. Cloud State University on Tuesday, December 17.
UMary is back home Saturday, December 21, when the Marauders host Bemidji State University.
