th-ranked University of Mary used six goals by six different players to skate past visiting #19 Midland University 6-3 in Midwest College Hockey play. The Marauders scored once in the first, twice in the second and three times in the third.
The Marauders improve to 10-4-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 9-4-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play and 5-2-0-0-0-0 against Midwest College Hockey competition. The Warriors slip to 8-7-0-0-0-1 overall and 5-4-0-0-0-0 in the MCH.
Taking advantage of their first power play opportunity of the game, the Marauders took the lead at 8:19 of the first period.
Michael Heitkamp fired a shot from atop the right circle that was turned aside by Warriors goaltender Liam Tereposky. Parked just outside the crease,
Derek Dropik immediately pounced on the rebound and stuffed the puck home for the only goal of the first period.
UMary increased its lead to 2-0 just 3:34 into the second period. Taking a short pass from
Luke Schleusner in the Marauders defensive zone,
David Loahr raced end to end with the puck. Skating down the left boards, the first-year winger from Shoreview, MN, fired a low angle shot from the bottom of the left circle that settled in the right side of the net.
Following a Warriors goal, the Marauders regained their 2-goal advantage with 61 seconds remaining in the second period. Triggered by another long shot by Heitkamp, this one from the left circle,
Jake Murray stationed himself in front of the Midland net and tipped the low shot past Tereposky and into the net for UMary's third goal of the game.
UMary sealed the win with a pair of goals in the first seven minutes of the third period just 102 seconds apart. After Hunter Mangen tipped home a blast from the left circle by Loahr for the Marauders second power play goal at the 4:57 mark,
Palmer Sinclair took a feed in the slot, deked a defender and went low into the left side of the net at 6:39 to push UMary's lead to 5-1.
Alex Senf eventually closed out the scoring for the Marauders with the third UMary power play goal in five opportunities. Midland scored once in three opportunities with a man advantage.
Heitkamp and Dropik led the Marauders in points with three each. Heitkamp assisted on three goals. Dropik scored once and assisted on two. Senf and Loahr had a goal and an assist each.
Caleb Cross finished the game with 22 saves for UMary. Tereposky had 34 for Midland.
The Marauders and Warriors wrap up their weekend MCH series on Saturday, November 9. Faceoff is 5 pm at the Starion Spirts Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink.
