BISMARCK, ND – A strong start for the University of Mary reversed course into an even stronger finish for MSU Moorhead in the 18
th Battle for the Paddle. The Marauders scored on the opening drive of the day and kept the Dragons off the board in the first quarter. MSUM found its footing in the second quarter and claimed a 52-3 win over UMary in the 2024 season finale for both teams.
On the first possession of the game, UMary drove 47 yards on ten plays to score on a 39 yard field goal by
Kevin Powell.
Carl Henry carried seven times for 25 yards and
Mujeeb Rufai caught a 22 yard pass from Jordan Polo-Solomon to headline the drive.
The Marauders defense took control of the rest of the first quarter, frustrating Dragons quarterback Jack Strand the first three possessions of the opening period. Facing a combination of pressure and tight coverage from the UMary defense, the All-NSIC quarterback threw six straight incompletions on the first three drives of the game. Four of the incompletions were caused by Marauders defenders knocking down passes.
Strand and the Dragons found their stride in the second quarter, posting 24 points before intermission. MSUM followed with 14 points in each of the next two quarters to retain the Paddle Trophy.
Henry finished the game with 60 yards rushing on 18 carries. He also caught two passes for 17 yards.
Luke Bodine added 39 yards on five catches. Polo-Solomon completed 12-of-22 passes for 112 yards.
