3-pointers sink Marauders hopes in home opener

BISMARCK, ND – After starting the season with five game on the road over a stretch of nine days, the University of Mary men's basketball team finally made their home debut against the University of Jamestown. Xavier Lewis just missed a double double and Kevin McGaskey scored a season-high 16 points for the Marauders but a barrage of baskets from beyond the arc by the Jimmies was too much for UMary to overcome in an 82-69 nonconference loss to Jamestown.

While UMary connected on just 3-of-19 3-point attempts, Jamestown made 15 of its 26 attempts from behind the arc.

Lewis was a force inside for the Marauders, scoring 15 points and hauling down nine rebounds. He hit 7-of-12 shots from the floor and converted his lone free throw as UMary outscored Jamestown in the paint 44-30.

McGaskey added three rebounds, two assists and two steals to his 16 points.

Two other Marauders also hit double digits in scoring. Alex Mattes added 11 points. Cayden Redfield poured in 10 points in only 11 minutes of play, making 4-of-5 shots and his only trey.

Jeremiah Jones, who leads the Marauders in scoring and rebounds this season, chipped in nine points and seven boards.

Anthony Walters and Owen Hektner did most of the damage for the Jimmies as the duo was 12-of-16 on treys. Walters led all scorers with 33 points as he made 6-of-7 treys. Hektner made 6-of-9 from behind the arc and 8-of-11 shots overall on his way to 22 points.

UMary opened the scoring with a basket by Ty Rogers. Jamestown struck back with a trey to take a 3-2 lead and stayed in front the rest of the game. The Marauders used an 18-6 run keyed by five point spurts from both Jones and Redfield to close within 64-61 but couldn't find the equalizer.

The Marauders (1-5 overall) play a second straight home game on Tuesday, November 19, when UMary hosts Valley City State University. Tip off is 7 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
