Homecoming sweep success as #11 Marauders blow past Huskies 10-1

MANDAN, ND – After a sedate start to a Sunday matinee, the #11 University of Mary hockey team electrified the crowd with three goals in under four minutes midway through the first period. The Marauders proceeded to score nine straight goals on their way to a 10-1 victory over visiting Northern Illinois University to complete a Midwest College Hockey sweep to wrap up a busy homecoming weekend.
 
After scoring a trio of goals in the opening period, the Marauders tacked on three more in the penultimate period before posting four in the third. The ten goals is a season high for UMary after tallying nine twice, including Saturday night against NIU. For the weekend the Marauders lit the lamp 19 times while allowing the Huskies to score three time.
 
The Marauders improve to 7-1-0-0-0 overall and 4-0-0-0-0 in Midwest College Hockey league action. The Huskies slip to 2-6-0-0-0 overall and 0-4-0-0-0 against MCH competition.
 
Joe Gronholz opened the scoring for UMary at 9:57 of the first period. Just 2:59 later Crae Dawson scored the first of his two goals in the game. It only took another 50 seconds for Alex Senf to add the Marauders third goal of the period.
 
The Marauders three goals in the second also came in quick succession as Dawson, Senf and Lucas Medeiros needed just 93 seconds to tally three times.
 
Among UMary's four goals in the third period, two came on the power play as the Marauders finished 2-for-5 with a man advantage. Northern Illinois' lone goal came in the third after UMary held a 9-goal lead and was a power play goal.
 
Senf added two assists to his two goals for a 4-point game while Dawson added one assist. Hunter Mangen (1 goal, 2 assists), Derek Dropik (3 assists) and Michael Heitkamp (3 assists) also had 3-point games while Jacob Murray added two helpers. Overall eight Marauders scored goals and 15 skaters had at least a goal or an assist in the game.
 
Caleb Cross, facing his former teammates for the first time after transferring to UMary from Northern Illinois prior to the season, was strong in net for the Marauders. Cross stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced from the Huskies.
 
The Marauders held a 58-18 edge in shots over the Huskies in the MCH contest.  
 
UMary returns to the ice at home against the University of Jamestown on Saturday, October 12. Face off is 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink.
