Gronholz finds net again for #18 Marauders in 4-1 loss to #3 Beavers

MINOT, ND – Joe Gronholz scored a highlight-reel goal for the #18 University of Mary men's hockey team against #3 Minot State University for a second straight game in a 4-1 road loss for the Marauders against the Beavers.

One of the nation's leading goal scorers in his first year at UMary, the first year forward from Alexandria, MN, has scored in each of the Marauders three games this season against the Beavers, including an impressive shorthand goal in a home loss to Minot State on Saturday. Gronholz leads the Marauders with nine goals and 18 points in 13 games and is 12th in ACHA MD1 in goals and 7th in points.

Down a goal after Minot State scored in the first period, Gronholz evened the score at 1-1 midway through the second period. With the Marauders on the power play, defenseman Michael Heitkamp left the puck in the neutral zone for Gronholz. Picking up steam down the left boards, Gronholz dipped around a Beavers defender draping him in the circle and beat MSU goaltender Jake Anthony for the equalizer at 10:09.

The Beavers regained the lead with 2:15 to play in the second on a Jay Buchholz goal before sealing the game with a pair of goals in the third.

Marino Ramirez had a strong night in net for the Marauders, stopping 38 shots in the game. Anything had 23 saves for the Beavers.

UMary finished 1-for-3 with the man advantage while Minot State was 0-for-1 in the Midwest College Hockey contest.

The Marauders are now 9-4-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 4-2-0-0-0-0 against Midwest College Hockey competition. The Beavers are 6-3-1-0-0-0 overall and 4-0-0-0-0-0 in the MCH.

UMary is next in action November 8-9 when the Marauders host #19 Midland University in a pair of MCH games.
