First MCH meeting between #7 UMary and #3 Minot State goes to Beavers

MANDAN, ND – In a new twist on the Highway 83 series between two schools 100 miles apart, #7 University of Mary and #3 Minot State University played each other in a Midwest College Hockey matchup for the first time on Saturday night. Fueled by a goal with less than a second remaining in the opening period, the Beavers downed the Marauders 6-1 to earn three points in the MCH standings.

UMary joined Midwest College Hockey last season when the Marauders made the upward move to American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 1 for the 2023-24 season. This is Minot State's first season as a member of the MCH.

The Marauders slip to 9-3-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 4-1-0-0-0-0 against Midwest College Hockey competition. The Beavers are 5-3-1-0-0-0 overall and 3-0-0-0-0-0 in the MCH.

Minot State stunned the home crowd with a goal just 33 seconds into the game.

The Marauders found the equalizer at the 14:34 mark. Down a skater, Gronholz aggressively attacked the Beavers puck handler at the left point. Taking the puck away, Gronholz skated down the right wing. Fighting off a Minot State defender trailing him the length of the ice, Gronholz cut to the inside of the left circle and showed his backhand before drawing the puck to his forehand and firing a shot inside the right post to tie the game at 1-1.

Looking like the game would enter intermission tied, the Beavers found the net with less than a second remaining on a goal by Joey Moffatt.

The Beavers wasted no time increasing their lead to 3-1, scoring 48 seconds into the second period. Minot State added another goal in the second and two more in the third to claim the third meeting this season between the two teams.

The Marauders and Beavers next face off in a midweek matchup on Wednesday, October 30, with a 7 pm game in Minot, ND.
