BEMIDJI, MN – In a rematch of the 2024 Northern Sun tournament championship game and a meeting between two of the top three teams in the NSIC standings entering the day, the University of Mary women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw at Bemidji State University. The Marauders scored in the first half and the Beavers tallied in the second as UMary remains one point behind BSU in the league standings.
The Marauders earned four points on their road trip to Northern Minnesota after picking up a 1-0 win at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday.
The Marauders are 7-2-3 overall and 5-1-3 for 18 points and 5
th place in the NSIC. The Beavers are 8-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 for 19 points and a 3-way tie for second in the NSIC.
UMary opened with a strong attack in the first half, holding a 9-2 edge in shots, including firing the only six attempts on net in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Marauders broke on the board first with a lightning-fast goal in the 42
nd minute of play. Just inside midfield, Kiera Hockley lifted an aerial ball towards the Bemidji State net with
Maicee Burke in pursuit. Outracing three defenders with the Beavers goalkeeper charging towards the ball, Burke beat everyone to the landing spot just outside the top of the box. Taking a shot off the first bounce, Burke chipped the ball over the charging goalkeeper and into the net on one hop.
It was the first collegiate goal for Burke, a freshman from Minot, ND, and sent the Marauders into intermission leading 1-0.
BSU found the equalizer in the 62
nd minute as a free kick set off a scramble in front of the net UMary's
Molly Fischer made the first save on a shot by Grace Schwoch but Schwoch was able to knock home the rebound.
Fischer preserved the draw for UMary with her second save of the game in the 89
th minute, stopping a shot by BSU following a corner kick.
The Marauders finished the game with an edge in shots (13-7), shots on frame (7-3) and corner kicks (7-3).
UMary continues its four-game road trip with visits to Winona State University (October 25) and Concordia-St Paul (October 27). The Marauders then return home for their final three games of the regular season.
