SPRINGFIELD, MO –
Lyndon Orr scored with 75 seconds left in overtime to lift #8 University of Mary to a 4-3 victory at #19 Missouri State University and complete the weekend sweep for the Marauders.
After the Ice Bears nearly claimed the win when an MSU shot rang off the goal frame, UMary went on the attack. Catching Missouri State on a line change, Orr sailed in alone on Ice Bears netminder Brady Govero but his shot was deflected out of play by Govero. With the following faceoff to the right of the goal, Orr claimed the draw and poked the puck towards the goal. Sidestepping a defender, Orr worked his way unimpeded to the left side of the net and slid home a backhanded shot to deliver the win for the Marauders.
This is the Marauders second overtime win of the season after downing Illinois State 5-4 on the road earlier this season.
The back and forth contest featured three ties and three lead changes.
Jake Murray scored the opening goal 11:55 into the first period for a 1-0 UMary lead at the first intermission. After Missouri State scored a pair of goals in the first half of the second period,
Alex Senf evened the game at 2-2 with 9:51 on the clock in the second period.
Jake Gronholz, who set up the Senf goal, scored himself off a Senf feed at 7:03 of the third to take UMary's second lead of the night at 3-2. Missouri State wouldn't fold, though, and knotted the game at 3-3 when Duke Boccardi scored his second goal of the game for the Ice Bears and send the game to overtime.
Caleb Cross made 32 saves for UMary. Govero made 40 stops.
UMary finished 0-for-3 on the power play. MSU converted one power play opportunity in five chances.
The Marauders improve to 9-2-0-0-0 overall and 6-2-0-0-0 against nationally ranked teams. The Ice Bears slip to 4-5-1-0-0.
UMary returns home to next host Minot State University on Saturday, October 26. Game time is 7 pm between the two Highway 83 rivals.
