SPRINGFIELD, MO – Third period goals by Lucas Medeiros and Michael Heitkamp rallied visiting #8 University of Mary past #19 Missouri State University 3-2 to open the weekend series between the Marauders and the Ice Bears.
 
The Marauders improve to 8-2-0-0-0 overall and 5-2-0-0-0 against nationally ranked teams. The Ice Bears slip to 4-4-1-0-0.
 
Heitkamp scored the first of his two goals in the game on a power play opportunity with 5:07 left in the opening period, ripping a shot from the dot inside the right circle into the net to send the Marauders into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.
 
The second period belonged to the Ice Bears, who tallied twice to build a 2-1 advantage.
 
The third period belonged to UMary. Medeiros knotted the game at 2-2 with a drive from the right point only 2:44 into the final stanza.
 
Exactly two minutes later Heitkamp struck again, releasing a wicked shot from the left circle through traffic to push UMary back in front.
 
Caleb Cross then took control of the net, stopping all eight shots he faced in the third. For the game Cross was credited with 36 saves for UMary, including a stop on a penalty shot in the first period.
 
Heitkamp now has six goals on the season. Hunter Mangan had two assists in the game, both on Heitkamp's goals.
 
Missouri State held a 38-33 edge in shots for the game, including 22 launched in the second period when the Ice Bears scored both their goals. UMary was 1-for-5 on the power play while MSU was 0-for-4.
 
The weekend series concludes with a 6 pm game Saturday, October 19, between UMary and Missouri State.
