#7 Marauders tripped up by Rams

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – After opening 2024 with a win in the Centennial State, #7 University of Mary dropped its next two games in a 3-game swing through Colorado. Colorado State University scored the final three goals on Sunday and  completed a 2-game sweep with a 4-1 win over the visiting Marauders in American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division I action.

UMary opened the weekend with a 2-0 win at ACHA MD2 Metropolitan State University at Denver on Friday before dropping a 2-0 decision to the Rams on Saturday.

The Marauders slip to 15-7-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOW-SOL) overall. The Rams are 13-7-2-0.

This is the first time the Marauders have suffered consecutive losses in regulation since losing three straight December 1-4, 2021. While an ACHA M2 squad, the three losses were to ACHA M1 members University of Jamestown (1 game) and Minot State University (2 games).

The Rams opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 4:02 into the game. Just over 10 minutes later the Marauders scored the equalizer. Taking advantage of their first of three power play opportunities, Isaiah Thomas scored his fourth goal of the season off helpers from Tanner Eskro and Derek Dropik.

With time running out on the second period, Anthony Colagrosso broke the tie and sent the Rams into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead.

UMary unleashed a 24-shot barrage in the third period in search of an equalizer but couldn't dent the CSU net. The Rams, meanwhile, tallied twice on 11 shots. Ty Doan increased the home team's lead to 3-1 at 13:51 before CSU closed out the game with a shorthanded empty net goal with 46 seconds on the clock.

Kyle Hayden finished with 31 saves in the game for the Marauders. Sam Simon made 49 saves for the Rams.

The Marauders were called for seven penalties for 14 minutes. The Rams were cited six times for 20 minutes.

UMary next takes to the ice Wednesday, January 10, at #1 Minot State University. Game time is 7 pm at Maysa Arena.

UMary next plays at home January 20-21 when the Marauders host Illinois State University in Midwest College Hockey action, the first of three straight home games. UMary was scheduled to host Northern Illinois University on January 13-14 but the Huskies forfeited both contests due to travel issues.
