Mattes sharp for Marauders on road in loss to Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, SD – University of Mary guards Gerald Gittens and Alex Mattes combined for 28 points on the road for the Marauders in an 81-56 loss against a hot-shooting University of Sioux Falls in Northern Sun action.

After scoring 16 the night before at Southwest Minnesota State University, Gittens tallied 15 against the Cougars. The junior was perfect at the line, making all nine of his free throw attempts as the Marauders finished the game an impressive 19-of-21 at the line. He also had two steals. This is the fourth straight game Gittens reached double figures and the 16th time this season.

Making his fourth straight start, Mattes posted 13 points for UMary (6-14, 1-13 NSIC). The freshman from Woodbury, MN, hit 4-of-7 shots from the floor and finished 4-for-5 at the line. He also added three assists. The 13 points is the second-most of his career and the most in an NSIC game. Mattes had 14 earlier this year in a win over Peru State.

Zyon Smith and Gunner Swanson both had eight points.

The Cougars (11-9, 8-6 NSIC) connected on 14 treys in 25 attempts, including five by Jack Cartwright on his way to 15 points.  Kyle Ingwerson led all players with 18 points and seven rebounds.

The Marauders continue their 3-game road trip with a visit to Northern State University on Thursday, February 1. Tip off is 7:30 pm.
