ALBERT LEA, MN – Behind a dominant effort from
Andrew Huber, the #10 University of Mary concluded a weekend and season sweep of Waldorf University. Huber produced two goals and two assists as the visiting Marauders rolled past the Warriors 6-1 in Midwest College Hockey play.
UMary beat Waldorf 7-1 on Friday.
The Marauders improve to 21-9-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOW-SOL) overall and 15-2-0-0-1 in MCH play. UMary leads the MCH with 46 points. Waldorf is 3-21-3-0 overall and 2-13-1 for 6
th place in the MCH with eight points.
UMary is inching closer to clinching the MCH title in the Marauders first year in the conference and in competing at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division I level. UMary has two MCH games remaining, both against second place University of Jamestown. The Jimmies have four games remaining and own 38 points int the MCH lead. A win in league play is worth three points. UMary hosts the MCH tournament February 16-18.
Despite a massive advantage in shots, the Marauders took their time in claiming victory. UMary scored once in the first period, twice in the second and three times in the third.
With time running out in the opening period, the Marauders scored first on a
Garrett Freeman goal at 17:22 off a feed from Huber.
Huber scored both his goals in the second, doubling the Marauders lead to 2-0 at the 1:44 mark before striking again at 11:43. Freeman and
Derek Dropik, who had two goals on Friday, had assists on both of Huber's goals.
Goals in the third period by
Tucker Kruse and
Luke Schleusner, both involving a helping hand by
Lucas Medeiros, pushed the UMary lead to 5-0. Following a power play goal by the Warriors at 17:58,
Cyril Nagurski buried a power play goal for UMary at 18:59 with an assist from Dropik.
The Marauders launched 56 shots in the game at the Warriors net, including 16 in the first, 18 in the second and 22 in the third. Meanwhile the Marauders allowed 16 shots total in the game.
Kyle Hayden finished with 16 saves for the Marauders. Jordan Berschimsky made 50 saved for the Warriors.
Both teams were 1-for-3 on the power play. The Marauders were called for 20 minutes of penalties on seven infractions. The Warriors committed six penalties for 18 minutes.
Freeman finished the night with a goal and two assists. Dropik also had a 3-point night for the second straight game as he assisted on three goals. Medeiros added two assists. Overall seven Marauders had points.
UMary returns home for four straight games, beginning with a Wednesday, January 31, contest with Dakota College of Bottineau. Face off is 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND.
