MANDAN, ND – Despite goals by
Liam Massie and
Tanner Eskro, the #10 University of Mary hockey team couldn't match the scoring output of #16 Illinois State University in the Marauders 3-2 loss to the visiting Redbirds in a Midwest College Hockey contest.
The win by Illinois State earned the Redbirds a weekend split after the Marauders rolled to a 7-1 win on Saturday. In the opening weekend of the season, Illinois State captured the opening game with a shootout win before the Marauders responded with a game in game two.
The Marauders are now 18-9-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOW-SOL) overall and 11-2-0-0-1 in MCH play. Despite the loss UMary remains atop the MCH with 40 points. Illinois State is 5
th in the MCH standings with 27 points and a record of 6-7-0-1-0 in league play and 18-10-1-0 overall.
Following a scoreless first period, the Marauders broke onto the scoreboard first when Massie tallied at 3:56. The Redbirds found the net 91 seconds before the second intermission to tie the game.
Illinois State remained on a roll, scoring the first two goals of the third period. With Marauders in the penalty box, the Redbirds scored two power play goals in less than a minute to take a 3-1 lead. Ethan Chesney scored both goals, the first at 12:06 and another at 12:59.
Eskro cut the Marauders deficit in half at 3-2 with a power play goal at 14:49. Despite outshooting the Redbirds 17-11 in the third period the Marauders were unable to find the equalizer.
UMary held a 50-38 edge in shots for the game.
Conan Hayton had 35 saves for the Marauders while Brendan Donavan had 48 for the Redbirds.
The Marauders finished 1-for-7 on the power play. The Redbirds were 2-for-6.
UMary's home stand continues when the Marauders host #1 Minot State University on Wednesday, January 24, at 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND.
