BISMARCK, ND – The first University of Mary player introduced at home games is now the first Marauder to score a goal this season. Team co-captain
Mo Malone hammered home a corner kick for the lone counter in the game as the Marauders edged visiting MSU Moorhead 1-0 in a nonconference game.
The Marauders remain undefeated on the season, improving to 1-0-1 with their first win of the season while notching a second straight shutout. The Dragons, a fellow Northern Sun member, slip to 1-1-0.
UMary controlled the pace throughout the first half, launching eight shots before intermission with five on frame. Defensively the stout Marauders limited the Dragons to a single shot.
Malone took advantage of the Marauders early aggressiveness as UMary earned a corner kick in the 18
th minute. Launching a ball off the set piece from MSU Moorhead goalkeeper Quinn Carter's right side, Malone's shot sailed unfettered into the net for the lone goal of the game. It was also the Marauders first counter of the season.
The Dragons responded immediately with perhaps their best scoring chance of the game. Just 65 seconds after the UMary goal, Brooklyn Broderick fired a shot from the right wing set to settle under the crossbar. Marauders goalkeeper
Molly Fischer rose to the challenge, punching the ball over the top of the net for her only save of the first half and a corner kick for the Dragons. MSUM failed to take advantage of the set piece opportunity and UMary sailed into intermission with a one goal lead.
In the second half the Marauders doubled the Dragons shot attempts 8-4 but both teams managed three shots on frame. Fischer and Carter both totaled three saves in the final 45'.
Fischer picked up her second straight clean sheet of the season as the Marauders have yet to allow a goal. Fischer finished with four saves in the game as Malone and the back line of fellow co-captain
Eli Olsen,
Tara Young,
Mary Meeks and
Sophia Lange limited opportunities for opponents to score.
Ava Vizenor and
Olivia Gardner paced the UMary attack with three shots apiece. Gardner fired two shots on net.
UMary finished with 16 shots overall and eight on frame to five and four for MSUM. The Marauders held a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks while the Dragons were whistled 10 times for infractions to six for the home squad.
The Marauders next head to Mankato, MN, for a pair of neutral site non-conference games against two powerhouse programs. UMary first plays 8
th ranked Grand Valley State University on Friday, Sept. 8, at 1 pm. In the final game before Norther Sun play begins, UMary faces 13
th ranked Central Missouri at 11 am in Sunday, Sept. 10.
