Home stand continues as Marauders host #5 Mavericks, Mustangs

THIS WEEK
The first 2-game home Northern Sun weekend of the season, the University of Mary hosts both 5th ranked Minnesota State University and Southwest Minnesota State University on Mental Health Awareness Weekend at the MDU Resources Community Bowl. The Marauders open the weekend with a 3 pm match Friday, September 22, against the Mavericks.

The Marauders 3-game home stand concludes with a visit from the Mustangs on Sunday, September 24. Game time is 1 pm.

RECORDS
The Marauders are 1-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the Northern Sun… the Mavericks are 4-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC, one of just four undefeated teams after the first weekend of conference play… SMSU is 0-4 and 0-1 in the NSIC.

LAST WEEK
The Marauders dropped a hard-fought 2-1 match at Minot State in the NSIC opener… UMary returned home Sunday and claimed a scoreless draw against visiting MSU Moorhead.

YOU AGAIN
In a scheduling oddity, the Marauders had two straight home matches against MSU Moorhead. After defeating the Dragons 1-0 on Labor Day in a non-conference meeting, UMary and MSUM played to a scoreless draw in the Marauders NSIC home opener on Sept. 15.

RANKED
The Mavericks are the third team the Marauders have faced this season who was ranked in the national preseason poll. Grand Valley State was 8th, Central Missouri 13th and Minnesota State 21st. All three are also ranked in this week's United Soccer Coaches Poll… The Marauders played both Grand Valley and Central Missouri in non-conference matches hosted by Minnesota State in Mankato, MN.

WEEK 1
The Marauders played a pair of nailbiters on the opening weekend of Northern Sun play. Down two goals at Highway 83 rival Minot State, the Marauders made a big second half push but could only manage to cut the deficit to 2-1 on an Olivia Gardner goal with 3:05 left in the game… On Sunday the Marauders dominated the Dragons but couldn't penetrate the visitor's goal. From creating numerous scoring opportunities to shutting down the Dragons attack, the Marauders only disappointment in their performance was in not finding a goal. UMary held an impressive 20-6 edge in shots – including a pair of blasts off the woodwork – and a 5-1 advantage in shots on frame.

GO GO GARDNER
Olivia Gardner generated an impressive offensive attack for the Marauders to open NSIC play. After scoring the Marauders lone goal against the Beavers, she launched eight shots against the Dragons. The sophomore had everything but a little luck as she placed two on frame and twice hit metal in the scoreless draw. Gardner is tied for 6th in the NSIC in shots.

1-2-3-4-5
The Marauders have qualified for postseason play five straight seasons and are projected to make it six. UMary is picked to finish 5th in the 2023 Northern Sun preseason poll. Last season the Marauders tied for sixth in the NSIC, forging a mark of 10-5-4 overall and 7-4-4 in conference action.

THREE
Molly Fischer has posted three clean sheets in six outings this season to rank 14th in the nation in shutouts. In the NSIC Fischer is 3rd in shutouts per game at 0.500… As a team UMary ranks 51st out of 251 teams in shutout percentage (.500).

OLD
Returning 2022 starters Mo Malone, Eli Olsen, Rio Spruenken, Ava Vizenor and Tara Young and partime starters Molly Fischer and Mary Meeks have started all four games this season for the Marauders. Fellow returners MaLiah Burke, Sophia Lange and Olivia Gardner all own three starts.

NEW
A pair of newcomers - freshman Ashlyn Davison and Amélie Faa, a transfer from Clemson, and sophomore Kira Hockley earned their first starts for UMary this season. They have each been in the starting lineup twice.

MORE MO
Team co-captain Mo Malone delivered the Marauders first goal of the season in the 19th minute of game two when she bent home a corner kick in a 1-0 UMary win over visiting MSU Moorhead. The junior defender also played a key role in a pair of shutouts to start the season. Malone helped UMary limit Western Colorado to no goals on nine shots (five on frame). She was credited with a team save to preserve the draw with the Mountaineers after clearing away a shot nearing the goal line and about to be tapped into an empty net. On Labor Day the Dragons were held to five shots (four on frame). For the weekend the Marauders defense didn't allow a goal in two games, giving up 14 combined shots with nine on frame.

2023 NSIC PLAYERS TO WATCH
Eli Olsen and Kenrda Park earned NSIC Players to Watch in 2023 for the Marauders. Park, a junior from Lake Havasu, AZ, has led the Marauders in goals in each of her two seasons at UMary… The forward found the net five times as a freshman before topping the charts with seven last year. She added three assists and totaled 17 points. Park also led the Marauders in points and game-winners (3). She finished the regular season 8th in the NSIC in goals, 9th in points and 4th in game-winners… Olson made an immediate impact on the Marauders in 2022 as she earned NSIC Defender of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks early in the season. A transfer from Charleston Southern University, Olsen scored three goals for UMary, including a couple of game-winners. She helped the Marauders post 11 clean sheets while limiting the opposition to 12 goals in 19 matches.

TRIO OF ALL-NSIC PLAYERS RETURN FOR MARAUDERS
Mo Malone and Rio Spruenken join Kendra Park as returning All-NSIC players as all three earned second team honors in 2022… A defender from Placentia, CA, Malone helped the Marauder post 11 shutouts in 19 games in her first season at UMary. Now a junior, the transfer from the University of Texas at El Paso scored a goal and added three assists last year… A sophomore midfielder from Krefeld, NRW, Germany, Spruenken added an extra dimension to the Marauders attack. In her first season at UMary, she posted two goals and dished five assists to finish with nine points in 17 games. Spruenken was 4th in the NSIC in assists and 13th in game-winning goals with two.
