Dominant effort earns Marauders scoreless draw with Dragons

BISMARCK, ND – A dominant effort on both ends of the pitch earned the University of Mary women's soccer team a scoreless draw against visiting MSU Moorhead. From creating numerous scoring opportunities to shutting down the Dragons attack, the Marauders only disappointment in their performance was in not finding a goal.

The Marauders held an impressive 20-6 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in shots on frame. UMary also blasted at least two shots off the post and crossbar.

Additionally the Marauders (1-3-2 / 0-1-1 NSIC) generated nine corner kick opportunities to just two for the Dragons (1-4-1 / 0-1-1), including a 7-0 edge in the second half.

Molly Fischer picked up her third clean sheet of the season, including her second against the Dragons. She was required to make just one save and faced only six shots, including just one in the second half that came in the closing moments.

Olivia Gardner started a big day when she fired the first of eight shots on net but Dragons goalkeeper Simone Lewald made the first of her six saves.

Fisher came up with a spectacular diving save in the 18th minute, leaving her feet to stop a blistering shot by Tabea Czech. It was the only time the Dragons generated a shot on frame in the Northern Sun match.

Two minutes later Gardner just missed a goal when she hit the crossbar.

The Marauders started the second half with a vengeance. In the first 12 minutes UMary fired seven shots and generated four corner kicks. Dragons goalkeeper Simone Lewald was forced to make a pair of saves and Gardner blasted a shot off the left post during the Marauders offensive flurry.

Despite a handful more opportunities, the Marauders were unable to solve the Dragons defense.

The Dragons only shot of the second half came in the closing seconds when Ava Kieser made a long run down the left sideline but Fischer forced her to stay outside to the and her shot went wide left.

Lewald made six saves in the match to earn the draw for the Dragons.

Gardner led the Marauders with eight shots, including two on frame and two more off metal. Rio Spruenken added four shots and Kendra Park had three.

The Marauders three-game home stand continues next weekend with a visit from Minnesota State University (3 pm on Friday, Sept. 22) and Southwest Minnesota State (1 pm on Sunday, Sept. 24).
