Big plays in closing act highlights Marauders road loss to Wolves

ABERDEEN, SD - For the second straight week, the University of Mary Football team ended their game on a high note as Jesse Forknell hit Traivon Dyson for the duo's third touchdown in just two games with 0:19 remaining. However, Saturday night would favor the home team as Northern State defeated UMary 41-10 from Dacotah Bank Stadium.

Saturday's loss ends a two-game win streak the Marauders football team held over the Wolves, who beat them for the first time since November 2, 2019.

The Wolves got off to a fast start thanks to a Stanley Haskins Jr. 26-yard touchdown run on the opening drive. The Marauders failed to answer as the Wolves defense swarmed them for two first-quarter interceptions.

After a field goal and another rushing touchdown from Brett Brenton, Kevin Powell tallied first for the Marauders in the closing seconds of the first half, knocking his second field goal of the season from 30 yards out.

The Wolves rolled to four more scores unanswered as the game carried on after the half. Trailing 41-3 with 6:11 left in regulation, the Marauders strung together an impressive drive 77 yards deep into Wolves territory. Jeremiah Moore jumpstarted it with a 21-yard run after a first down sack. Jesse Forknell later hit Luke Bodine over the middle for a 23-yard gain to get UMary into the red zone.

Down to 4th and 3 from the eight-yard line, Forknell led edge rushers to his left side on a play-action fake, leaving Traivon Dyson wide open on a slant for the Marauders first touchdown of the game. Their third connection through the air marked another example of the duo's chemistry and the team's collective unwillingness to quit.

Forknell, a junior from Fargo, ND, got his first start of the season and third career start at quarterback for the Marauders on Saturday. He finished 13-29 passing for 123 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. He absorbed three sacks in the game.

Jeremiah Moore finished as the Marauders leading rusher with 45 yards on 9 carries.

Luke Bodine led the Marauders receiving corps with 48 yards on 4 receptions. Traivon Dyson was right behind him for 36 yards on 3 catches and a touchdown.

Seth Jarrett and Reginald Morrow led the Marauders in tackling with 7 tackles each. Morrow also had a pass breakup and a tackle for a loss. Kevin Butler added six tackles and Eli Heinrich tallied four including one for a loss. Grant Collins and Caden Green closed down the pocket in the middle to combine for the Marauders lone sack of the game in the second quarter.

Kevin Powell tallied a 30-yard field goal and his fourth PAT of the season while also punting 6 times for 235 yards (average of 39.2 yards).

The Wolves rallied for 460 yards of total offense as the Marauders garnered 143.

UMary Football will return home next Saturday, September 23 to host #10 Bemidji State (3-0) back at the bowl for a 2 p.m. kickoff. Tickets are available online at www.umarytickets.com.
