Young UMary Softball team finishes season in Mankato

MANKATO, MN - The University of Mary Softball team finished its 2023 season Sunday against Minnesota State University. Janelle Bergmann finished the weekend with six base hits and extended another hitting streak to five games as the Marauders dropped their final two games 8-0 and 6-0 to the Mavericks.

The Marauders finished 7-40 this season, matching their win total from the 2022 season.

GAME ONE
The Marauders couldn't get into a rhythm offensively in the first game, falling 8-0 to the Mavericks (31-17, 20-10 NSIC).

Gianna Lara and Cheyenne Behrends combined for five of the Mavericks eight hits. Lara opened the scoring in a five-run second inning, and bookended it with an RBI single to right center in the fifth to clinch the game on an eight-run rule.

McKayla Armbruster struck out ten and allowed only three hits in her 20th win of the season. Nicole Eckhardt was tagged with the loss.

Mckenzie Reinhardt, Brooke De Jonge, and Janelle Bergmann all finished 1-2 in the game.

GAME TWO
The Mavericks solidified their stance as fourth overall in the conference with a 6-0 win over the Marauders.

Sydney Nielsen paced the Mavericks hitters, going 2-3 with 3 RBIs and a home run in the 5th inning.

McKayla Armbruster earned her second win of the day, striking out 9 to finish the year with 197 strikeouts on the season, the highest total in the Northern Sun. Jamison Ness earned the loss.

Janelle Bergmann and Erin Murphy both finished 2-3 in game two. Bergmann finished the weekend 6-10 at the plate. Brooke McClure and Janine Warne both finished 1-3. Mckenzie Reinhardt finished 1-4.

The Marauders could potentially return 17 players from a young 2023 roster. This includes the entire pitching staff as well as many top hitters like true freshmen Francesca Villaneda and Janelle Bergmann who finished with team-high batting averages of .316 and .306 respectively.

The Marauders will graduate five players in Devyn Ritz, Madison Wszolek, Kaylee Kannegiesser, Brooke McClure, and Morgan Diedrich. All saw the field in 2023 with four being regular starters. Ritz (.301), Wszolek (.295), Kannegiesser (.275), and McClure (.237) finished with career-highs in hitting in their final seasons in the orange and blue.
