Draheim, Wagner dominate Bulldogs to key Marauders doubleheader sweep

KIRKSVILLE, MO – Dominant starting pitching performances by Austin Wagner and Jonathan Draheim carried visiting University of Mary to a doubleheader sweep of Truman State University. The senior duo combined to limit the Bulldogs to two runs on eight hits and no walks over 15 innings as the Marauders claimed the opener 21-2 before winning game two 2-0.

GAME 1 | University of Mary 21 Truman State University 2
Wagner held the Bulldogs in check over the course of eight inning, limiting Truman State to just six hits and two runs without a walk. The eight innings is a career-high for the fire-balling lefthander who needed just 88 pitches to earn his second win without a loss on the season.

A massive ninth inning carried the Marauders over the 20-run mark for the second time this season. Holding a 6-2 lead through eight innings, UMary pummeled Truman State for 15 runs in the ninth.

Four Marauders finished with at least three hits as the team compiled 20 overall, with just three for extra bases. Cal James had three hits, scored three times and drove in four runs. Josh Walker homered and drove in six runs. Kalem Haney led all players with four hits and he scored twice. Michael Polson, Daniel Martin and Derek Shoen also scored three runs each and Polson and Martin had three hits each.

PIVOT POINT
The Marauder scored all the runs needed in the first inning. Polson and Martin opened the game with back-to-back singles. Polson scored on a fielder's choice ground out by Walker. Martin and Walker scored with two outs when a Krece Papierski fly ball was dropped by the Bulldogs leftfielder to give UMary a 3-0 lead.

Wagner then took over, facing just 16 batters over the next five innings. He allowed three hits and hit a batter but was backed by three double plays. After giving up two runs in the sixth inning, Wagner retired the last seven batters he faced before handing the ball off to Mark Schommer, who pitched a scoreless ninth.

STAT OF THE DAY
The Marauders turned four double plays, including three off line drives to double up Bulldogs runners… Just by itself the 15 runs scored in the 9th inning for the Marauders would be the 7th highest scoring game by UMary since 2016.

GAME 2 | Marauders 2 Bulldogs 0
As impressive as Wagner's effort was in the opener, Draheim proved even more dominant in game two. The tall righthander picked up his first win of the season and 12th of his career while tossing his second shutout at UMary. Draheim limited Truman State to only two hits in the 7-inning complete game, striking out seven without walking a hitter.

Draheim struck out the first three batters he faced and four of five.

PIVOT POINT
With a pair of Truman State runners in scoring position in the third inning with just one out after a UMary error and a double, Draheim stranded both after inducing a foul ball fly out to left and a line out to center. He then retired nine of the next ten hitters he faced, allowing just one more hit.

Noah Hull then led off the top of the fourth with a home run to center field. UMary doubled its lead to 2-0 when James scored on a Kyle Jameson sacrifice fly in the 6th inning.
