Upset bid by Marauders falls short in season finale despite Mattern career night

MOORHEAD, MN – In pursuit of a postseason playoff berth, Treyton Mattern established a new career scoring high and the visiting University of Mary men's basketball team matched host MSU Moorhead basket for basket. It was the Dragons ability to get to the line, though, that brought the Marauders 2022-23 season to a close.

Mattern scored the first 12 points of the game for the Marauders on his way to a career best 26 points. He hit four treys on seven attempts and was 10-of-19 from the floor while also making both free throws. The junior guard also led the Marauders with six rebounds and four assists.

Both teams finished the night 31-of-61 from the floor. UMary held the edge in treys, going 12-for-21 behind the arc while MSUM was 8-for-25.

Where the Dragons created the separation was at the line. MSUM shot 17 more free throws and made 14 more, going 16-for-22 while UMary finished 2-of-5.

Both teams traded baskets early. With Mattern providing the scoring punch, the Marauders took their only lead of the night at 7-5. Facing a Dragons team pursuing an opening round bye in the Northern Sun tournament, the Marauders kept close all night. Down as many as 11, a late three by Jeremiah Jones pulled the Marauders with 42-39 before the Dragons went into intermission leading 44-39.

UMary continued to hit shots in the second half, holding a 15-13 advantage in field goals and a 5-3 edge in threes. MSU Moorhead used a 20-5 edge in free throw attempts to keep the Marauders at bay.

Zyon Smith was deadly accurate for the Marauders, sinking 3-of-4 trey attempts and finishing 6-of-8 overall. Kam Warrens added 12 points and had four rebounds and three assists in his final UMary game.

Jones added eight points off the bench and fellow freshman Ty Rogers added six while making 3-of-4 shots.

Jaden Stanley-Williams led the Dragons with 20 points and nine rebounds. Lorenzo McGhee added 19 and Gavin Baumgartner had 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

The Marauders finish the season 11-15 overall and 7-15 in the NSIC. MSU Moorhead is 22-6 and 17-5.

In addition to Warrens, this was also the final game for fellow UMary seniors Lucas Mayer, Veljko Radakovic and Gertautas Urbonavicius.
