Wacha and Hakim lead Marauders efforts against #12 Bulldogs

DULUTH, MN - The University of Mary Women's Basketball team (13-9, 12-7 NSIC) started a tough road trip with a visit to the NSIC North champion University of Minnesota Duluth (21-3, 18-1 NSIC) Friday night. The 12th-ranked Bulldogs got off to a hot start en route to a 72-52 victory over the Marauders in the Romano Gymnasium. 

UMary would open the scoring right off the jump ball with Megan Voit taking a layup straight to the hoop. Ryleigh Wacha would score on the ensuing drive, but the Bulldogs would answer with a 7-0 run as Maesyn Thiesen helped lead the Bulldogs to an 18-10 advantage after the first quarter. 

Thiesen tallied 14 points in the first half as Duluth led UMary 39-22 at the half. Shooting 8-22 (36.4%), the Marauders found most of their success from inside in the first half with 14 points in the paint. Megan Voit led the Marauders scoring with seven points. 

Duluth would increase their lead to 25 through the third with a 58-33 lead entering the final ten minutes. The Marauders shooting began to heat up in the fourth quarter as they shot 8-15, but it would be too late as the Bulldogs hung on to win 72-52. Duluth outshot UMary from the field 48.2% to 39.2%. The Marauders were outrebounded 30-41, and shot 8-19 at the free throw line for a season-low of 42.1% at the charity stripe.

Ryleigh Wacha led with 8 points and grabbed four rebounds. 

Moriku Hakim also led with 8 points and grabbed two rebounds and two steals. 

Megan Voit and Addison Rozell both added 7 points each. 

Megan Zander and Reese Wishart both scored 6 points each. 

Carly Kottsick and Zoe Velde dished 3 assists a piece. 

UP NEXT
UMary Women's Basketball will stay in Minnesota for a big game Saturday at 5:30 pm against St. Cloud State (15-8, 12-7 NSIC). The Marauders and Huskies are both 12-7 against NSIC teams, but UMary holds a one-game advantage with a 7-4 record in divisional play. The winner Saturday night will be second in the NSIC north division outright.
