MOORHEAD, MN – Facing a nationally-ranked team for the second time already this season, the University of Mary men's basketball team held serve early before 7
th ranked MSU Moorhead pulled away from the visiting Marauders.
Gerald Gittens led the Marauders with 17 points in the Dragons 99-55 win in UMary's first Northern Sun road game of the year.
Gittens, the Marauders leading scorer this season, was one of three UMary players in double figures for points. He finished 6-of-13 overall and drained his lone 3-pointer of the game. The junior guard added three rebounds and two assists.
Zyon Smith connected on two treys and scored 12 points.
Brock Heffner connected on 5-of-9 shots to score 10 points. He also had two steals.
Xavier Lewis led UMary with six rebounds.
Jamir Price led the Dragons with 19 points, hitting 7-of-8 shots and dishing 10 rebounds. He was one of five Dragons to score in double figures.
The Marauders (4-3 overall, 0-2 Northern Sun) took a pair of early leads, the last on a Smith 3-pointer for a 12-9 lead. Following a Dragons (8-0, 2-0 NSIC) surge, the Marauders pulled within striking distance at 29-25 on a jumper by Heffner and an
Alex Mattes layup off a Heffner feed. It was as close as UMary would come the rest of the game.
UMary next hosts the University of Minnesota Crookston in NSIC play on Thursday, December 7. Tip off is set for 5:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
