Thomas, Hayden spark #5 Marauders past #4 Jimmies 3-2 to gain weekend split

MANDAN, ND – In the second game of a home-and-home weekend series between two of the top teams in the nation, #5 University of Mary bounced back to knock off #4 University of Jamestown 3-2. Isaiah Thomas had a goal and an assist and Kyle Hayden made 42 saves to help the Marauders gain a split with their I-94 in-state rival Jimmies.

Playing in front of a packed house for the 5th annual Teddy Bear Toss game, UMary scored twice in the second period to rally past the Jimmies.

The Marauders evened the season series against the Jimmies at one game apiece, bouncing back after an 8-2 loss in Jamestown ND, on Friday.

Both members of American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 1 and Midwest College Hockey after the Marauders made the jump up this season, the Marauders improve to 12-4-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOW-SOL) overall and 8-1-0-0-1 in MCH play. The Jimmies are 13-4-0-1-0 overall and 11-2-0-1-0 in MCH action.

The Jimmies came out hot, scoring just 94 seconds into the game. Less than two minutes later the Marauders just missed finding the equalizer as a shot rang off the post before both teams settled in defensively.

A pair of goals 44 seconds apart in the second period gave the Marauders control of the game. Thomas found the net at 8:46 to pull the Marauders even and set off a cavalcade of stuffed animals launched onto the ice. The stuffed animals will be donated to children in the community.

Andrew Huber broke the tie at 9:30, taking advantage of helpers from Garrett Freeman and Cyril Nagurski.

Just 13 seconds into the third period, the Marauders struck again. One night after becoming the Marauders all-time leading goal scorer, Seth Cushing once again delivered a key goal. Using assists from Thomas and Tanner Eskro, Cushing pushed the UMary advantage to 3-1.

The goal gives Cushing 238 points in his career, second all-time at UMary to Alex Flicek (292 points) as he pushed past Zach Garrett (237). Cushing increased his career goal total to 139 after passing Flicek (137) on Friday.

Jordan Kromm scored a power play goal at 6:29 to pull Jamestown within 3-2 before Hayden and the UMary defense turned aside all other scoring opportunities for the visiting Jimmies.

Facing 44 shots, Hayden limited the Jimmies to just two goals on the night. He also helped limit Jamestown to one power play goal in four opportunities with a man advantage.

With their final home game of 2023 in the books, the Marauders next visit Northern Illinois University in West Dundee, IL, on December 8-9 before wrapping up the calendar year at Minot State on December 13.
