MINOT, ND – In a matchup between two of the nation's best teams, 7
th ranked University of Mary just missed knocking off #1 Minot State University in a 3-1 loss that came down to the closing seconds. It wasn't until an empty net goal by the Beavers that the visiting Marauders hopes of victory were extinguished.
In a defensive gem between the two Highway 83 rival programs, the game remained within a single goal until the final 14 seconds of play.
With the first intermission fast approaching, the Beavers opened the scoring when Sheldin Howard tallied with 22 seconds left in the first period.
The Beavers pressed hard to increase their lead but
Kyle Hayden turned away 33 shots in the first two periods, including a flurry of three shots just outside the crease by the host team with just under eight minutes remaining before the second intermission.
UMary evened the game late in the second. Chasing down a loose puck in the corner,
Andrew Huber centered a pass to
Garrett Freeman in the slot. Freeman buried the puck in the back of the net to tie the game 1-1 with 5:00 on the clock.
Taking advantage of a power play opportunity, Reid Arnold scored 43 seconds into the third period to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead. Defense took center stage the remainder of the game as the two teams combined for just 12 shots in the third period after firing 49 the first two stanzas.
Hunting for the equalizer, Hayden was pulled for an extra skater with just under two minutes left in the game but the Marauders were unable to tally. Howard scored his second goal of the game into an empty net with 14 seconds to play.
Hayden finished the game with 36 saves in the Marauders final game of the 2023 calendar year. Jake Anthony had 21 saves for the Beavers.
The Marauders finished 0-for-4 on the power play. The Beavers finished 1-for-4.
UMary, ranked #7 in American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 1, is now 14-5-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOW-SOL) overall. The #1 Beavers are 19-4-0-0-0.
The Marauders return to the ice January 6-7 with a 2-game series at Colorado State University.
