ABERDEEN, SD – Two goals in a span of four minutes lifted the University of Mary to a 2-0 win at Northern State University in the opening round of the Northern Sun tournament. The Marauders advance to the NSIC semifinals and will play Concordia-St. Paul
on Friday, November 10, at 11 am in St. Cloud, MN.
Less than a week after suffering a 1-0 loss on the same pitch to the Wolves to miss out on hosting a tournament game, the Marauders extracted more than a modicum of revenge.
"I am so proud of this group," said UMary Head Coach
Sarah Cook. "Their faith and belief in one another showcased itself on the pitch today. Maliah Burke led the team out the gates with a fantastic finish and topped it off with an amazing assist to
Olivia Gardner.
"Every line did their job and then some! We are very excited to keep playing and rolling onto the semifinals."
The Marauders broke through in the 36
th minute. A save on an initial shot by
Olivia Gardner was collected by
Kadyn Sharpe atop the penalty area. The freshman quickly redirected the ball to the right side of the goal box. Following a quick touch,
MaLiah Burke buried her shot under the left crossbar for a 1-0 lead.
Continuing to press their advantage, Gardner found success off a great cross from Burke. Outracing a Wolves defender down the right flank, Burke sent a pass from the right edge of the penalty are to Gardner crashing the goal box for a one timer inside the right box.
From there the Marauders defense took control of the game, limiting the Wolves scoring opportunities and earning UMary a spot in the NSIC semifinals.
The Marauders held an 11-9 advantage in shots with both teams placing six on frame.
UMary goalkeeper
Molly Fischer stopped all six shots she faced to post her 9
th clean sheet of the year.
