Marauders open 2023 NSIC soccer tournament at Northern State in replay of regular season finale

MONDAY MADNESS
In a replay of the regular season finale, the University of Mary visits Northern State University in the opening round of the 2023 Northern Sun Women's Soccer Tournament. Game time is 4 pm on Monday, November 6, in Aberdeen, SD.
 
1-2-3-4-5-6
This is the sixth straight season the Marauders have qualified for the Northern Sun women's soccer tournament and the seventh time overall under the direction of UMary head coach Sarah Cook… The six straight NSIC tournament appearances is the second-longest streak in program history. UMary qualified for the postseason its first seven years in the league (2006-2012).
 
LAST WEEK
With home field in the opening round of the NSIC playoffs on the line for the winner, the Marauders suffered a 1-0 loss at Northern State University in the regular season finale. Megan Fasteneau scored in the 88th minute to secure third place in the NSIC for the Wolves. UMary held a significant statistical edge in most categories, including shots attempted (12-5) and shots on frame (8-2).
 
THE RECORDS
The Marauders finished the regular season 8-7-3 overall and 7-5-2 in the NSIC to earn 23 points and tie for 5th place. UMary earned the 6th seed in the league tournament… Northern State is 9-3-5 overall and placed 3rd in the NSIC with 29 points on a record of 8-1-5.
 
TOURNAMENT TIME
The top eight teams from the NSIC Soccer Standings qualified for the single-elimination tournament. The top four seeds host first round matches on Monday, November 6, with the winning teams advancing to the semifinal and championship rounds on Friday, November 10, and Sunday, November 12, in a bracketed format. There will be no reseeding following the first round matches. The highest remaining seed following the quarterfinal matches will host both semifinal and championship matches.
 
On Monday #1 seed St. Cloud State hosts #8 Minnesota Duluth. #2 Minnesota State hosts #7 Concordia-St. Paul. #3 Northern State hosts #6 University of Mary. #4 Bemidji State hosts #5 Augustana.
 
ON THE LINE
The winner of the 2023 NSIC Women's Soccer Tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Central Region Tournament. The first/second round matches of the regional tournament will take place on campus on November 16-19 while third/quarterfinal rounds will be contested at campus sites on November 30-December 3.
 
NSIC TOURNAMENT RESULTS
The Marauders are 8-8-3 all-time in the NSIC tournament. UMary won the tournament its first two times in the league (2006, 2007). In the three draws the Marauders have advanced once, edging Bemidji State in 2018 in a shootout on penalty kicks.
