MANDAN, ND – #20 University of Mary hockey fended off a late rally by visiting Midland University to claim a 3-2 win in Midwest College Hockey action.
Seth Cushing, one of three Marauders to score a goal, also added an assist and
Isaiah Thomas distributed a pair of helpers as UMary won a third straight game.
Cyril Nagurski kept up his impressive play as the defensemen scored a power play goal at 9:44 of the first period. It was his fourth goal of the season.
The Marauders tallied twice in the second. Hustling down the ice,
Isaiah Thomas beat the Warriors down the ice and centered a pass to
Lukas Robinson at the top of the slot. Deking a defender and going to his backhand, Robinson scored his second goal of the season at 8:14 to double the Marauders lead.
Taking advantage of another power play opportunity, the Marauders added to their goal total less than six minutes later. Working the puck around the perimeter,
Johnny Witzke slid a pass to an open Cushing just atop the left dot. Cushing unleased a wicked one-timer low inside the near post for his second goal of the season.
Midland found its way in the third period, scoring twice with under four minutes to play but unable to find the equalizer.
Connan Hayton had another big night in net for the Marauders, winning his third straight game as he stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced. Liam Tereposky was forced to make 44 saves for the Warriors as UMary held a 47-28 edge in shots.
The Marauders (3-1-0-0-1 W-L-OTL-SOW-SOL) and the Warriors (3-4) wrap up their weekend series on Saturday, Oct. 21. Game time is 5 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink.
