FREMONT, NE – In the first-ever meeting between the University of Mary and Midland University, the visiting Marauders left an indelible impression on the Warriors with a 6-2 victory.
Seth Cushing and
Garrett Freeman led the Marauders offensive outburst as the two forwards scored a pair of goals each.
Games between UMary and Midland will soon become a common occurrence. The Marauders make the move to American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division I next season (2023-24) and are joining the Warriors as Midwest College Hockey members.
With the victory over Midland, the Marauders completed a 3-game weekend road sweep of Midwest College Hockey teams as UMary took a pair of games at Waldorf University on Friday and Saturday.
Ranked #1 in ACHA Men's Division 2, the two-time defending champion Marauders improve to 24-4-1. The ACHA M1 Warriors are 3-14.
The UMary specialty units shined in the victory as the Marauders faced nine power play opportunities for the Warriors. The Marauders not only killed off all nine Warriors opportunities with a man advantage, UMary scored two shorthanded goals and added a power play goal during one of their five chances.
UMary was whistled for nine penalties totaling 18 minutes while Midland committed five penalties for 10 minutes.
Cushing opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 8:33 of the first period. Just over three minutes later the Marauders leading goal scorer struck again as Cushing used a helper from
Cyril Nagurski to post his 15
th goal this season. A goal by Midland's Cody Shearer at 17:18 sliced UMary's lead to 2-1 entering the first intermission.
Paced by a fast start from Freeman, the Marauders dominated the Warriors in the second period. Freeman first scored on a power play just 2:07 into the stanza. Just over three minutes later Freeman lit the lamp again, this time scoring an unassisted shorthanded goal to increase the Marauders lead to 4-1.
Johnny Witzke kept the scoring going for UMary, tallying his 11th goal of the season at 14:21. The All-American defender then set
Derek Dropik up far the Marauders last goal of the game with two minutes left in the second period, increasing the UMary advantage to an insurmountable 6-1 lead.
Kyle Hayden had another impressive outing. With the added pressure of the Marauders skating a man down nine times, the reigning ACHA M2 Player of the Year stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced in the game.
UMary outshot Midland 37-19, including an 18-10 advantage in the second period.
The Marauders return home to start a 4-game home stand when the University of Cincinnati comes to town on Saturday, January 14. Game time is 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink.
