ALBERT LEA, MN – A four-goal first period triggered by another outstanding effort by
Isaiah Thomas carried the University of Mary to a 7-2 victory over Waldorf University. The win gives UMary a sweep of both the weekend and season series between the Marauders and the Warriors.
Thomas finished the game with one goal and three assists for his second straight four-point game. The forward from Bismarck, ND, also had a goal and three assists in the Marauders 5-1 win over the Warriors on Friday.
The Marauders improve to 4-0 this season against the Warriors in a preview of next season when UMary joins Waldorf competing in Midwest College Hockey as an American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I member. After this fifth season competing in ACHA M2, the Marauders move to ACHA M1 with membership in the MCH in 2023-24.
Ranked #1 in ACHA Men's Division 2, the two-time defending champion Marauders improve to 23-4-1. The Warriors are 9-10-2.
Derek Dropik opened the scoring with a goal 7:08 into the contest off a feed from
Johnny Witzke. Just 86 seconds later, the Marauders struck again when
Caleb Petrie found the net off helpers from Thomas and Witzke. It was the first of two goals of the game for Petrie.
The goals kept coming for UMary.
Jaren Hugelen scored at 12:16 followed by
Seth Cushing contributing his 13th goal of the season at 13:54. The Warriors ended the Marauders scoring run when Zak Jimenez scored for the home team at 15:18. UMary entered intermission with a 4-1 lead.
The scoring pace slowed only slightly in the second period.
Teddy Lillico netted a goal at 2:00 with Thomas (8:30) and Petrie (14:47) soon following for a 7-1 UMary lead. Waldorf again scored before the end of the period but was unable to mount a further attack.
Neither team scored in the third, the only period of the weekend series the Marauders failed to light the lamp.
Thomas (1 goal, 3 assists), Petrie (2 goals), Lillico (1 goal, 1 assist) and Witzke (2 assists) all had multi-point games.
Conan Hayton posted 17 saves for the Marauders. Splitting time in net for the Warriors, Jordan Berschiminsky posted 20 saves on 26 shots and Nelson Schiller stopped 29 of the 30 shots fired at him.
The Marauders have one more stop before returning home, visiting Midland University for a single contest in Fremont, NE, on Monday, January 9, at 2 pm. Midland is also a member of ACHA M1 and MCH.
