Thomas sparks #1 Marauders to 5-1 win at Waldorf

ALBERT LEA, MN – A second period explosion by the University of Mary carried the Marauders to a 5-1 road win over Waldorf University. The Marauders scored three times in the middle stanza in a preview of what next season will be an American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I contest between Midwest College Hockey future member UMary and current member Waldorf.

Five players scored for the Marauders in the first of two meetings this weekend with the Warriors. Ranked #1 in ACHA Men's Division 2 and the two-time defending champions, the Marauders are now 3-0 this season against the Warriors. UMary swept Waldorf at home in Mandan, ND, to open the season.

Seth Cushing put the Marauders on the board first at 13:32 of the opening period off an assist from Alex Flicek to provide UMary a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.

Tanner Eskro sparked the Marauders offense to a big second period when he scored a shorthanded goal at the 3:13 mark. Johnny Witzke then found the net at 9:26. Just nine seconds later, the Warriors retaliated with their only goal of the contest when Morgan Sweeney found the net for an unassisted counter.

Caleb Petrie closed out a big second period when he scored at 15:10 to increase the Marauders lead to 4-1.

Isaiah Thomas finished the scoring for UMary with an empty net goal with 82 seconds left in the game. The goal capped a huge game for Thomas as the Bismarck, ND, native finished with a four-point game after proving a helper on all three second period goals.

Flicek and Petrie joined Thomas with multi-point games. Flicek finished with two assists and Petrie added an assist to his goal.

Conan Hayton was strong in net for the Marauders, allowing just one goal while making 27 saves. Cade Kujawski stopped 41 shots for the Warriors while allowing four goals. The Marauders fired 16 shots on the Warriors net in each of the first two periods. Both teams were credited with 14 shots in the third.

UMary and Waldorf were both 0-for-2 on the power play with the Marauders specialty units scoring a shorthanded goal. Both teams were cited for four infractions amounting to eight minutes.

The Marauders improve to 22-4-1 while Waldorf is 9-9-2. The series concludes Saturday, January 7, with a 2 pm game in Albert Lea, MN.
