Marauders look to build on home win during weekend visit to Minnesota State, Concordia-St. Paul

THIS WEEK
The University of Mary men's basketball team wraps up the Northern Sun crossover portion of their schedule this weekend with a pair of road games against NSIC South division teams. UMary first visits Minnesota State University on Friday, January 27. Game time between the Marauders and the Mavericks is 5:30 pm at the Taylor Center in Mankato, MN. On the way back home UMary visits Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, January 28. Tip off against the Golden Bears is slated for 3:30 pm at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul. MN.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Marauders split a pair of games at home… UMary was edged 69-54 by Upper Iowa on Friday. The Marauders held the Peacocks under their season scoring average by nine points but UMary shot just 34% from the floor. Kam Warrens led the Marauders with 13 points and added five rebounds and three assists… Another solid defensive performance got UMary back in the win column with a 67-59 win over Winona State. Warrens had 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Gertautas Urbonavicius also had 19 points, making 3-of-4 behind the arc. Treyton Mattern added 14 points as UMary shot 52.2% from the field and made 8-of-17 behind the arc.  
 
RECORDS
The Marauders enter the weekend 9-9 overall and 5-9 in the NSIC. UMary is 12th overall in the NSIC and 6th in the North… Minnesota State is 13-7 overall and 7-7 in the NSIC (9th overall, 5th South)… Concordia-St. Pau is 4-16 overall and 2-12 in the NSIC (15th overall, 8th South).   
 
CRUNCH TIME
The Marauders have eight games remaining this season with only three at home. UMary hosts the University of Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State February 2-3 and Northern State on February 16.
 
STEPPING FORWARD
In his third season with the Marauders, Kam Warrens continues to take impressive forward strides. After transferring to UMary from UMary from Yuba Community College, he averaged 4.5 points/game during the abbreviated 2020-21 COVID season before jumping to 8.7 ppg for the 2021-22 season. This season Warrens averages a team-leading 13.6 points/game while shooting 48.9% from the floor. He's making 42% of his treys and 86% of his free throws. Warrens also grabs 5.9 rebounds/game. Five times Warrens has cracked 20 points in a game and has led the team in scoring eight times.  
 
500
Kam Warrens cracked the 500 point club in a career-best 26 points at Augustana earlier this season. The senior has scored 543 points in his three seasons at UMary, covering 59 games… Gertautas Urbonavicius is closing in on 500 points at UMary. In his second season at UMary Urbonavicius is at 455 points with Marauders over 45 games.
 
HISTORY LESSON – MARAUDERS v. MAVERICKS
The Marauders are 4-13 all-time against the Mavericks… UMary snapped MSU's 4-game win streak over the Marauders last winter… UMary snapped a 5-game losing streak to Minnesota State with a 96-91 overtime win in the 2016 NSIC quarterfinals… The two teams first met Dec. 12, 2008, in Bismarck with the Mavericks winning 83-61… After losing the first four games in the series, UMary claimed its first win 84-69 over MSU in Bismarck on January 15, 2011 as All-American Anthony Moody hit eight treys and scored 31 points and Jordan Wilhelm added five three-pointers and 17 points… The Marauders picked up their first – and only - win at the Taylor Center 75-61 on January 14, 2017… LAST MEETING The Marauders scored the last six points in the game to win 65-60 at home on January 22, 2022. The game featured 16 lead changes and seven ties. Matthew Johnson led UMary with 14 points and seven assists. Davids Attelbauers had eight points and the winning basket Gertautas Urbonavicius added 13 points and eight rebounds. Shawn Hopkins had 17 points for MSU. It's the Marauders 2nd win at the MAC over MSU.
 
HISTORY LESSON – MARAUDERS v. GOLDEN BEARS
UMary trails in the all-time series with Concordia-St. Paul 15-9… The Marauders won the first two meetings between the schools in the 1980s when both were members of the NAIA… When UMary joined the NSIC in 2006-07, CSP won the next five meetings… The Marauders broke their losing streak to the Golden Bears with an 83-74 win at the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest on November 29, 2009, soon followed with a 75-68 win at the MAC on January 23, 2010, behind 24 points by Eric Erdmann. It was the first NSIC win for UMary over CSP… UMary is 3-7 at home against CSP and 6-8 on the road… LAST MEETING The Marauders overcame a 3-point deficit moving into the final minute of play to snap a 3-game losing streak to the Golden Bears. Treyton Mattern tied the game at 66-66 on a 3-pointer with 58 seconds to play. Lucas Mayer then tapped home an offensive rebound with 4.8 seconds to play for the winning basket. Gertautas Urbonavicius had 20 points for UMary, Kam Warrens scored 14 with nine rebounds and Lucas Mayer had 12 and seven. Elijah Ormiston had 28 points for CSP.
 
BALANCE
The Marauders feature six players scoring between 13.6 ppg and 6.6 ppg, with five players averaging at least 8.2 ppg. Kam Warrens leads the way at 13.6 ppg… Zyon Smith is close behind at 11.1 ppg in his first season at UMary… Treyton Mattern is at 10.9 ppg. Gertautas Urbonavicius checks in at 9.8 ppg with Lucas Mayer at 8.2 ppg and Jeremiah Jones at 6.6 ppg. 
 
HELPING HAND
The Marauders are averaging 15.2 assists per game to rank 61st in the country and 2nd in the NSIC.  
 
PICKPOCKET
Freshman Jeremiah Jones is 10th in the NSIC in steals (1.4/game). Treyton Mattern is 21st in steals at 1.1/game.
 
FOR THREE!
The Marauders are knocking down 36.8% of their 3-point attempts this season to rank 5th in the Northern Sun and 61st in NCAA Division II. Opponents are connecting on just 33.9% of their attempts from behind the arc. Gertautas Urbonavicius (19-of-43) leads the way at 44.2% with Gunner Swanson at 42.9% (16-of-43) and Kam Warrens at 42% (29-of-69) at 42%... Zyon Smith makes 1.7 3s/game to lead UMary. He is 18th in the NSIC. Warrens is 23rd at 1.6/game.

Six different Marauders have led UMary in scoring this season: Kam Warrens (8x), Treyton Mattern (3x), Zyon Smith (3x), Gertautas Urbonavicius (3x), Lucas Mayer (2x) and Jeremiah Jones.
 
SHARE THE LOAD
The Marauders rank third in the NSIC in rebounds/game at 37.3 and it's a team effort. Kam Warrens leads UMary in rebounds/game (5.9) and is 16th in the league, followed Jeremiah Jones (5.6) at #19 and Gertautas Urbonavicius (5.4) at #23.
 
SECOND CHANCE CITY
The Marauders are 6th in the NSIC in offensive rebounds at 10.3. Lucas Mayer leads the second chance efforts with 2.3 offensive boards/game, sixth-most in the NSIC.
 
DOUBLING DOWN
Halfway through his freshman season, Jeremiah Jones has two double doubles. He had 15 points and 16 rebounds against Minot State. In the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Tournament championship game Jones dropped 11 points and ten rebounds. The guard from South Holland, IL, has also been a tremendous distributor with eight assists against Presentation and seven against PR-Bayamon… For the season he is averaging 6.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists. He is shooting 82.8% (24-of-29) at the free throw line… Jones leads the Marauders in steals and is second in rebounds and assists… He ranks 19th in the NSIC in rebounding, 10th in assists and 10th in steals (1.4/game).

CENTURY STANDOUTS
The Marauders start a pair of Bismarck Century High School graduates in forward Lucas Mayer and Treyton Mattern. Both are second generation Marauders as their fathers played for UMary. Mayer's father Dave played on the Marauders 1981-82 Men's Basketball Hall of Fame team that set a school record for wins. Mattern's mother (Gerene Saylor Mattern) is a member of the Marauders Hall of Fame for her exploits on the track. And Mattern's father, Darren, coached both Mayer and Mattern at Century HS.
 
DEBUTS
Seven Marauders made their UMary debuts in the season opener against Presentation. Zyon Smith (Highland CC) transferred to UMary before the start of the season. After redshirting last season for UMary, Gunner Swanson came off the bench for the Marauders. Freshmen Marquel Saleek, Jeremiah Jones, Xavier Lewis and Ty Rogers all made their collegiate debuts this season.
 
RETURNING
The Marauders have six players back who saw considerable action last season, including four from the starting rotation.
  • Sr. F Gertautas Urbonavicius started all 27 games and was second on the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg… averaged 4.8 rebounds/game… shot 47%from the floor and 41% on treys.
  • Sr. F Kam Warrens started 26 of 27 games… averaged 8.7 points/game and team-high 6.1 rebounds/game
  • Sr. F Lucas Mayer started last 12 games of the season after returning from injury… averaged 6.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game… shot team-leading 68.8% from the floor
  • Jr. G Treyton Mattern started 14 of the 18 games he played… averaged 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds/game… 3rd on team with 1.7 assists/game.
  • Sr. F Veljko Radakovic was a key reserve for the Marauders on the front line, playing in 19 games. He averaged 2.5 ppg.
  • Jr. G Deven Franks saw significant minutes in the back court last season, playing in 18 games and starting three games… Averaged 2.4 ppg.
  • Soph. F Liam Dougherty was limited to six games as a freshman.
  • Fr. G Gunner Swanson redshirted last season at UMary
 
NEW
Zyon Smith lead a group of seven new players for the Marauders, six of whom are freshmen… Smith averaged 14.2 ppg and shot over 43% from the field for Highland Community College last season to earn 2nd team Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference honors.
 
Freshmen for 2022-23 includes guards Colton Hall, Jeremiah Jones and Marquel Saleek and forwards Xavier Lewis, Payton Mogire and Ty Rogers.
 
YEAR TWO
Head coach Jack Nelson returns for his season with the Marauders after leading UMary to their best conference record since 2017. Nelson directed the Marauders to their first Northern Sun tournament road victory with an 82-70 win at Winona State to send UMary to the quarterfinals and a trip to the Sanford Pentagon. During the regular season the Marauders defeated #6 University of Minnesota Duluth 75-71, the highest ranked NCAA team UMary has beaten at home. Nelson recruited and coached Kai Huntsberry, the 2021-22 NSIC Newcomer of the Year and a 1st team all-conference selection who broke the NSIC tournament record for 3s in a game with eight.
